de havilland, perchance?
It’s part of the RAF Museum at Hendon…
Wow! Ian’s T4 looks much better than the last time I saw it! Good job. I’d still like to know what it was used for though, as it has never flown…
The owl markings are from the line training flight at RAF Cranwell, part of (I believe) DSGT, the Department of Specialist Ground Training
There is a Rolls Royce publication called ‘The guide to clean living in jet VSTOL’ which has some cracking piccies of early P1127 testing, showing various ground erosion caused by the aircraft, including manhole covers flying about! There’s also pics of holes 3ft wide and 1 ft deep caused by the RCS..
Something with low pressure tyres, yes. So a JP for instance, with tyre pressures between 70-80psi would be able to, but a Hunter, for example that has main tyre pressures of 200psi+ would not. Extra distance would depend on surface hardness, but would be typically 25-30% greater than for a metalled runway.

Biggin and Leuchars both want the Delta 3 ship (Gnat and 2 Hunters)
It is more than a few months since it last flew, it is nearly 2 years! It was grounded with a fuel leak, and due to one thing or another has pretty much been at the bottom of the priorities list. It has now risen to the top and will be worked shortly. It needs to be ready for early September…
XP984 at Brooklands doesn’t have a ‘Harrier’ wing. It lacks both the tip extensions and the leading edge extensions found on the Harrier I wing. XP984, being the last of the P1127s, incorporated a lot of bits found in the Kestrel series jets, including the revised anhedral tailplane. Her wing is (as far as i can tell at present) effectively the same as that found on the Kestrel. I amy have a look at some of the old flight test reports later, if I’m bored, and have a look see…
Hi, Pete, not really sure about that. GR5s were never painted camo, they were only green. So unless that wing has been ‘cammo’d up’, it isn’t a Harrier II mainplane. Also, looking at the pics again, there appears to be a king in the covered leading edge, and the Harrier II leading edge is straight. Harrier I mainplanes either had the dogtooth, or in the case of FA2s, had the dogtooth faired in.
Cheers
Duncan
PS how’s things at Charlwood?
Ahh no… New ‘metal’ wing sets haven’t been made since 1997, since the last of the new build SHARs. And they were grey, not camo… And if hey look new to you Peter, I’ve got a ‘brand new’ car for sale…. 😀
Cough cough XL577
Err… WV318 stills looks better than ‘577 in my opinion! Will, couldn’t agree more, the T8M is far and away the best looking Hunter!
Sounds like this is shaping up to be a good do. Hopefully I will get to fly into my old workplace in a fast jet! (Never having had the chance to fly at Dunsfold). It will be nice to see the place again, it’ll make a pleasant change from the ugly monstrosity that is Warton…
