I have found LEMB excellent with some very well informed members. Well worth registering for.
Could surely only be topped by adding a canberra. Sounds like it will be awesome.
I tended to think that the main issue was lugging around the lead shielding to keep the crew safe. The Russians always seemed a little less concerned about that issue. However in the modern age of pilot-less drones, a power source for high range & endurance without the need to shield the pilot – could be interesting?
Vulcan just passed over my back garden in Suffolk looking glorious in the sunshine – on the way to or from Clacton. Not sure what time her slot is.
Great to see that video – its been too long since I’ve seen a Gannet airborne
That site is a bit before my time but i guess the shows you see as a kid leave a mark. My parents kindly dropped off a box of books the other day. On digging through it included the programmes of the first airshows I went to as a kid. I’d forgotten some of them but not some of the performances. First up was Duxford 77 & 78 featuring the B17 before she was Sally B, a Vickers Varsity and a number of Moths. Also, Duxford before the M11! I really remember the pre safety displays where the jets came in from behind and over the crowd, usually on a fast run so you didn’t hear them coming. F111, F4 and the Vulcan.
Next were the Mildenhall programmes – air fete 78, then 80, 81, 83, 84 & 85. Nearly all works coach trips from my dad’s company. Got to remember walking in one end of a C5 and out of the other end. Cockpit visits on C130s. The sound of lightning and Dutch F104 displays, not to mention seeing a Blackbird fly.
Have most of the display lists to look through as well. Should keep me busy reading through.
There have been ups & downs with Hornby manufacturing in China – slow development & production of models, shipping fuel costs, delays when containers have been stranded in ports. New models are usually ‘in development’ or ‘in transit’. The quality is excellent but prices have steadily risen. Would be a welcome move to see production and model development for Airfix back in the UK, possibly with a view to Hornby coming back too?
There is some interesting stuff on LEMB Pete thanks for the link. You don’t know a anyone who might be interested in / know more about the rest of the photos of the scuttled german ships I have?
Pete my LEMB membership is now validated & the link is fine cheers
Cheers Peter & Dave
Great to know a bit more about a photo I have had for years. I have registered for LEMB but the link didn’t work so will have an explore of the site later
Simple! For me it would be Honington & Wattisham, both for obvious reasons….Honington for Canberras, Valiants, Victors and then the Buccaneer.
Wattisham – do I need to spell it out! 🙂 If only I had been into aviation when they were active at these stations! I mean, I watched them fly over with admiration, but wasn’t as fanatical as I am now! Oh and having a high end digital camera back then would have been handy!
Lightning Spirit – I was driving through Bildeston at the end of Wattishams runway when a Tornado came over very low last week. They still have the occasional fast jet visitor but it would be great to see them back full time instead of those Apaches.
Put a mention in for Wethersfield or Honington – would be good to see a museum linked to the 8th and the raf with a flyable field. I know the raf regiment still have Honnigton so that is currently off the table. Bentwaters wasn’t as operational in ww2 as other fields, but does represent the cold war. Duxford covers raf fighter command, and Lincolnshire was the spiritual home of raf bomber command. Its a shame that Wethersfield has only relatively recently lost its tower and other buildings. Alconbury seems to have had development plans linked to it (stand to be corrected there), the army have helicopter in Wattisham and Woodbridge, and Coltishall has gone to the Council and will surely not have a future as a museum. All that leave East Anglia rather short of potential good sites.
Cheers Pagen01 – useful to know
What is the supply of Avon engines like? Does the Canberra share an interchangable variant with the hunters, sea vixen etc?
Yep, not an Arado. Does the National Geographic program say what happened to the Northrop / Grumman 1:1 model? Would make quite a museum piece in its own right.
Looks rather like the Ar 234 at Dulles is it then for Arado jets. Unless anything undiscovered surfaces from the east…
