Surprise surprise, it didnt sell, mind u neither did his Phantom Fin (Oh well wheres Phantom Phixer when u want him LoL)
Bex
Somebody mention me? 😀
Personally Bex there’s a few things Id rather spend £2K on than a Phantom Phin. Sorry.
£28,000 for an engineless Shar? They must be joking. Look at the sale prices qouted by BuccSociety in a recent thread for Buccanneers that have been sold of late. Albeit by disposal.
Its good to see that as usual some have not got a grip on reality:rolleyes:
I know what you mean at least offer the aircraft to the Shuttleworth Collection first, maybe if the conditions are right on a calm summer evening they could fly her from Old Warden. 😮
In Rugby at the minute (at work) and can hear the engines been ran up at Brunty. Wind must be blowing the right way or they are running them with the taps wide open. :diablo:
Well if rumours can help a bit feel free:p
Cheers
Cees
Maybe best left alone. You never know what trouble we could get into making untruths up. :diablo:
I was only lucky enough to see a flying Mossie once but its was one of the most moving sights Ive ever seen.
Best of luck to the chaps with their project they need to be applauded. Any chance of a UK visit to Legends at somepoint?
“sprung vertically upwards whilst the jet was inverted”
Maybe I have a differant image in mind to the one your describing but as the weapon falls away from the pylon as gravity takes effect would that not be impossible to do?
Bruce,
Are you and MAM in any way involved in this magnificent project?
Cheers
Cees
The Midland Air Museum, Cees? Now thats how rumours start, Lol :p
A lovely thought though that would get my vote. After all something like 3/4 of all FB.VI’s were built in Coventry. A little known fact that I read the other day. Hopefully the source is correct in its comments now Ive committed it to the www :diablo:
… From little acorns! 🙂
And in Bex case it will be………………………
grows a replica of a long lost Canberra variant. :p
Ahh I see an old fashioned game of work out the missing word.
Is there an A in it? Great ok that was a lucky guess. Is there an S in it as well. OK youve got me stumped now. :diablo:
Work in progress matey work in progress.
Great pictures of the aircraft and the event Ben. The TSR2 pic you mention is I think one of those that generates debate from both sides of the fence. Wouldn’t want it on a wall in my house but its visually a very powerfull piece.
Glad you appreciated my taste of pics. Ive spent ages looking at that Rapide and If Mr Heath can cut me a deal I may be tempted. I know he occasionally reads the forum in his lunch hour. Hello Mr Heath “MAM’s Self Titled Chief Guide” 😀
The Canberra was a nice picture but for me the best picture at the show has to be this one below of a Dragon Rapide. The artist is Roger Murray. Very much in the style of the old railway posters. Now if only I had some spare money in the bank…………..
The same artists Hurricane was rather nice as well.
Pics taken from the Guilds www. Im sure they wont mind me posting them here 😀
Even the RAF uses them these days for squadron crests.
And if its good enough for the RAF museum………………;)
Let your fingers do the walking to the Sign Makers section in the Yellow Pages. These companies do the stickers that white van man and the like put onto their vans so can clearly print/cut to order.
Unsure what colour repro would be like on the colours for the roundals bit no reason why it shouldnt work. The Vampire has flush skins/rivets and the dayglo markings in service were large stickers anyway. 😀
Cheers for the info AVI
I have been reading and watching the thread unravel with interest. Just thought she looked stunning in the air to air pictures. Would be the nearest I ever get to owning a Spitfire.
Ive only ever built and designed Radio Control Planes before so maybe the theory I have isnt quite what is required. But for what its worth could Tom not use a plan such as the one we are discussing as a basis for his metal replica?
After all the hard work with aerodynamics etc has been sorted and proven. All he would have to work out would be the change in construction and associated stress loading etc.
Or am I seeing things in to simple a way?
Eyeball/ballpark guess: a 70% metal replica should come in at around 1100 – 1400 lbs empty weight. By comparison, it’s about the size, perhaps a little smaller, than an SF-260 which is about 1500 lbs with a max gross of around 2500 lbs.
If you build it to 2500 lbs you’ll never get it off the ground unless you shoehorn a real Merlin into it!
Size the spar. Then try to figure out how to build it. How can you decide on the construction/size without knowing what the loads are? Before you can size the spar you’re going to have to size the aircraft in order to obtain the wing span/area and wing loads.
Without doing that first, Tom, you’re going to be running around like a chicken with it’s head chopped off. Try starting from square one. I’d like very much to see you eventually not only build this replica, but to successfully get it off the ground.
BTW if it were me building it (which it ain’t) I’d be thinking of composites – fiberglass and carbonfiber.Article about 80% Spitfire for inspiration:
That Spitfire is simply stunning. What plan is it from? They mention in the article they were thinking of making it available. Did they?
Neither do we Ben, neither do we.
Well you know Im not the kind of person who seeks adulation and fame and my part in this has only been very small but…….. I dont mind saying that there is a distinct difference in the quality of the roller and brush work between mine and other peoples efforts. 😀
Here you go Peter this is a link to the Guilds website. If you click on the galleries section it will show you some of the great work done by the guilds artists. Some of which I think may possibly be at the event.
Below is a link to the Midland Air Museums site that gives the dates and also some more up to date happenings at our lovely museum.
Many of the museum members are spending a lot of time preparing the Robin hanger for the display. Ive spent a couple of nights with a paint brush in hand already and I think a few more will be coming up for all involved.

Ps for those interested the monday to which Ben refers is invitation only. After that though all are welcome.
