Nice pics, Low.
Only been to Sywell twice (first time by accident) so not an expert on Sywell but your pics really capture the charm of the place.
I dont think the mod’s will allow me to type what words left my mouth on the first view of that pic :diablo:
I would keep it as an F-4C but then again Im biased.
The first of the US Air Force Phantoms, and the first of the USAF examples to see service in Vietnam.
You may find this www useful if you complete as an F4C.
Just seemed an unusual visitor to the airfield. Apart from the odd Herc, Merlin, Chinook and Lanc thats all we normally get military wise.
A case of 2 + 2 = 5
Are the dates of the test flights/departure still as posted over the weekend?
Watched her and two Spits land at Coventry last August but missed after displaying at Stonleigh. But missed PA474 coming in for the service. Would like to see her up and about.
Seem to recall that there was some J47 parts on ebay earlier today.
Be something nice to put in your restored container.
Be warned though they werent very substantial parts. 😉
Was that the BBMF guys flying into Cov at the weekend in a military Islander?
Was watching it circle whilst stood on top of the Midland Air Museums F-4Phantom.
Looks stunning but such a tease with smudging the nose art.
I never really understood the point of this one.
Surely if your going to put all that effort into a replica project you would make it a pure replica. Ok maybe you may change/improve the structure slightly but not play with the outline and dimensions.
Completly mad but he had a dream and went with it so proverbial hats off if only for the courage and madness of it all.
Very nice article and pics you did Lee.
A few of us at the Midland Air Museum were dribbling over them on sat nite. 😀
The road that leads around the site of the former Armstrong Whitworth factory at Baginton is called Siskin Drive. Unsure if any of the other roads around there have any aircraft related names.
Also remember as a kid going on holiday around Christchurch and a housing estate with loads of roads with aircraft names. Remember a Lysander Way. Memoray escapes me at the mo for others in the area. Im guessing that was the site of the old airfield.
Still suffering from man flu matey.
Seems wrong doesnt it that us Brits had to scrap pretty much all our Phantoms and as a result only a few examples now survive with non being allowed into privarte hands, yet an ex US machine is available to purchase for a private buyer elsewhere in Europe. To me that sucks.
Nah my six numbers are coming up Scotty. Sorry to dissapoint you there matey.
Maybe I would get another Vietnam Phantom to work on.
Its not like Ive got a lot on my plate at the minute is it?

Yes I know Im not good on the ole heights Rob. 🙁
Although be honest to the forumites I am getting better. Getting me to go on top of the Vulcan before Chrimbo was an achievement. Well I saw it as one anyway. :p
Depends what you mean by power up Peter. There’s no engines in the Argosy so……………..
But we do have the ability to run electrical power through her so the internal cargo bay lights work and there is also a radio in the cockpit which is usually tuned into Coventry Airports frequency.
The work done in the cargo area of the Argosy makes it a fantastic exhibit thats full of atmosphere well worth a trip to come and see.
Gotta be the SHar FA.2 or Harrier T.4 for me Im afraid. 😉
Will you be helpin out and graftin mate? Got Painter to roll up his sleeves for the last two days so can we get you to do the same?
Ive got to say that they are both in rather good condition.
The Cottesmore example was difficult to get a proper look at as it was on the other side of the fence to me.
The Wittering example I can comment further on as i was cheeky and took about 50 detailed pics for my next modelling project. Its a little faded in areas but on the whole it looks cared for.
The port outrigger undercarriage door features a list of the names of the people who painted her last time round. The paint is in good sound condition and I could only see one minor area where the paint was lifting from the airframe. I would also say that on this example the tires were all in good condtion and not deflated in anyway. Although it may be that the RAF fills them with something other than air. Put it this way if I owned it Id be pleased with the condition on her. A very tidy airframe.
