Hi
I Drove all the way up from Swansea and very disappointed, suppose I was expecting too much after seeing photographs from previous years, it was good to see the typhoon there but sadly could not get up close due to barrier, would have been nice if they could have provided steps with the cockpit being open.
After spending a whole 15 minutes in the MBCC centre I then popped into the hanger next door where I asked one of the people in blue overalls if I could pop over the ankle height barrier to take a close up shot of the EAP to be met with ” sorry its against health and safety”.
Sorry but to say that yesterday of all days really made me stop and think.
Whilst sat in the café having a cuppa before I set off I got into conversation with others who were also a little disappointed who felt that the open day was a little half hearted by the RAFM, one had been involved as a volunteer during the 1980’s at both Hendon and Cosford and remarked that the RAFM seem to become less public minded as time goes by.
Yesterday would have been a lot better if it had also included a open cockpit day, maybe an idea for future times?

Hi
Sorry to hijack the thread but came across this photo of 19 sqdn in May 1939 in a book and wondered if the buildings in the background survived the war, it would be marvellous if somebody has a comparison shot they could share.

Hi
Hope the attached is of interest, this information was taken from a Vickers Armstrong Supermarine design book which belonged to my grandfather who worked for Supermarines. and can be seen slightly different to your own compiled Supermarine type listing Whitley.

All I have done is to modernised the way the list is presented.

Hello Garry,
The label you have should read” The Supermarine Aviation Works Limited”
(Vickers Ltd)
The date on yours either reads 18-2-30 or 18-2-36.
Which some time ago I was informed that your label was put on all pre 1937 Supermarine built assemblies, post 1937 the following label was used.

Have the book and get the shoes in the sales…..Simples:highly_amused:
Hello Everyone,
First of all I would like to say thank you to Rocketeer for starting this thread off, I personally think it’s well overdue and a good opportunity to clear the air.
Set below is my participation in a recent thread…
“In our conversation the phrase “A pointless ‘Burma Bash’ too far” came up which I think describes the situation quite nicely.”
First of all these are entirely my own thoughts.
To be very honest I do not blame Mark12 from walking away, too many times armchair critics bash away at people on any internet forum without any shred of personal experience of the subject they are talking about, comment yes, air your thoughts yes but not bash away until someone of Mark12’s standing walks away leaving the forum at a loss.
I have no doubt that there is a lot of forum members who would back me up in saying Mark12 always assists out with information freely without asking anything in return apart from a simple thank you and some respect. He may not be everybody’s cup of tea and nobody goes through life without at least upsetting a few people however that does not retract from the fact this gentleman has received more than his fair share of disrespect of late over one subject.
I ask some of those armchair critics how much of their hard earned cash did Mark12 spend when he went overseas on a private venture to report on progress of a certain project, how much taxpayers money did Mark12 receive to pay towards his overseas jolly? I know I can say NONE , but just look at the amount of first hand information he shared with all of us !
I know through personal experience that there are some great people on this forum, very helpful and always willing to share information along with research that may have cost them a fair amount of cash/time to accumulate and then there are a few others that seem to enjoy teasing, saying yes I will help you then nothing at all but that the nature of the beast.
I am friends with a person who was once a member of this forum some years ago, a few bashed away at him with comments until he left simply because he did not let them have their own way, a case of throwing teddy out of the playpen, he has great knowledge and has helped many behind the scenes, even those in the early days of their own projects who bashed him, the comments got so personal he had to walk away from the scene resulting a member of his own family had to write to those concerned warning of possible legal action.
All I am asking is that all of us enjoy the forum, always engage brain before typing, and show some respect to those who know more about a subject than you do before we all lose out.
Mark12 has helped quite a few of my friends out and for that I would like to pass on my own along with their thanks and hopefully he will grace our forum once again in the not too distant future.”
I am a member of other forums, straight away I would say we are very lucky to have the Mods that we have, the ones on the other forums are far less tolerant and can be a little blinkered towards respect for others opinions by deleting threads without any debate what so ever. However this forum and others like it are simply for where like minded adults can share knowledge, exchange views as well as expand their own knowledge base by asking questions, sadly some of those supposedly “adults” behave like children when they do not agree with another person’s views/opinions, this is then where it gets out of hand and spoils it for everybody else. Sadly it does not stop there either, some can behave like school ground bullies “ I don’t like him so you should not either if you want to be in my gang” attitude which I find very amusing, equally there a few that throw teddy out of the playpen when they don’t get what they want.
There are also those who play little mind games, putting on threads for all to read “ I will help you out etc etc ” so everybody can see how good a person they are but that’s as far as it goes sadly, why play this type of game as it just leaves to a bad taste , because one day that person you have done that too may just be the person who has what you want in the future.
All the majority ask is use the forum for the best reasons and if it’s your sole intention picking stupid faults in the occasional spelling mistake, bashing away at a subject you really don’t know a gnats genitals about or just behaving like a bombastic child then please just leave us alone and go read a book in your garden shed.

Here is a photo of the prop from R6915 which shows a DH prop but not with a VDM spinner, as P9374 is a earlier spec spitfire would it not have been fitted with the same? If not anybody got any idea which Mk 1 spitfires were fitted with VDM spinners and DH props?

Wondering if Tangmere has any photo’s of the spinners type which P7394 has today that he can share.

I learnt from the best :highly_amused::highly_amused:
Well done Beermat..indeed this is a rotol prop as fitted to Spitfire Vb BL628.
I believe the same principal in construction/sizing etc is the same for DH props
