Its great news to read that only conservation work will be carried out but not happy to read that it will be suspended again, also it seems that they cannot find an inner tube for a 10″ tyre, is the IWM simply on a freebie scrounge or did they forget that Historic flying is on the same site π
Hi
Would like to thank everybody for their input, especially Mark12 and Edgar for sharing their in depth knowledge and information. My apologies for not writing sooner but I wanted to research the subject a bit more and have spent some time delving into books, finally finding a clearer photo of a cockpit door without a handle which I have scanned in to share with you, it appears to be the standard spring loaded catches seen on all spitfire cockpit doors connected to each other via cables with a metal ring connecting each one.
Also scanned is some information from another book regarding the crow bar.

Jay
Tangmere,
thank you for the confirmation of the crow bar
Pagen,
If you compare this photograph of a later Mk1 spitfire of 609 sqdn and the one I originaly posted you will see that not only is there still no crow bar but also there is a door handle where as on my original posting there is no handle hence the title of the thread.
Even at my age I can tell the difference between a door handle on a spitfire and a crow bar π

Jay
From what I have read in a Alfred price book the early spitfires did not have a crow bar either until 1940.

Here are a few more shots taken of 263 Whirlies taken at RAF Warmwell, Dorset.
Am I right in saying that the remains of one resides with someone in the Isle of Wight?
Jay
Is this correct? I assume the mirror itself is, but was this mounting ever used on Spitfires?
Pete
Neither mate, the replica you recently bought is the correct type mirror with the correct stem.
The seller has merely done the usual listed it as spitfire to increase both price and chances of finding a fool.
oldgit158,…Er….if that councillor is serious, then it might be YOUR council rates that fund the dig….
…Wonder if she’ll put any on the bar for the watchers, I mean enthusiastic supporters.
I live in Worcester now so it will not be my hard earned cash she spends, I was born in Castle Bromwich and only work in the area now, thats bad enough at the best of times π
However it will be my round if they do find a spitfire, sorry corgi ones do not count .

Always thought that Liverpool had standards compared to Manchester :diablo:
Matty, yes have been looking for some time, saw one on the spitfire spares site but thought it was too pricey for the condition, if I do get a spare will bear you in mind.

Thank you, PM sent

How about a re make of the 1980’s series Airline?
actually based on the books of William Greatorex
Mentions the witness watching planes land at the airport, whilst he talked with the Bofors gunners, in 1950! Just who were you chaps fighting in 1950, that Brum needed AA at your airports? North Korea, perhaps?
But then again, it also says,” they found the ones in Burma.
So what we have here is a eye witness who never actually saw the burial of the said aircraft but was told of it by a complete stranger, well I am no sherlock but as a former police officer this tells me that somone here is jumping on the bandwagon or in plain english spinning another 50 shades of utter B*******t. π
But if a councilor believes it then hey lets get digging regardless of no proof, regardless that where they are buried was next to even then was a busy road on a active RAF airfield with a

As an aside…weren’t the jigs for spit wing spars found in a disused factory near castle brom? without these then many would not have been rebuilt?
The “jigs” were actually dies that round tubes are pulled through to produce the square tubes used in the mainspar construction. They were found still on the shelf at the British Alcan factory in Redditch which is about 25 miles away from the Castle Bromwich factory, and it was certainly not in any derelict factory either. British Alcan was the latter day name for the company which originaly supplied the CBAF during the war, 3 main factories.. the first in Sheepcote street in Birmingham, the second was in Garretts Green and the third was in Redditch.
My grandfather originaly worked for Supermarine being transferred to the CBAF where he met my grandmother and settled in Birmingham after the war, he worked at first in the toolroom until it was taken over by Lucas, he then became a final works inspector which he remained until the final day of production when the very last fuselages, tail sections and wings were transported by road to South Marston for completion in approx 1946 to 1947.He then oversaw the removal of any jjigs/fixtures or machinary belonging to Vickers Armstrong ltd to where I do not know for certain but was told it was somewhere down south.
My grandfather had a diary book which he had to keep in those days and it mentions of the many companies who were instrumental of closing the factory down, this is now in the hands of a guy in Birmingham who has spent many years tracking down many of the original suppliers etc, including researching on the various rumours of aircraft/engines and just parts associated with both the factory and nearby aircraft
If they was there then am 150% we would have heard about them by now π
βFifty Shades of Duck-Egg Greenβ…..a gripping trilogy about what colour the underside of a Spitfire really was! :diablo:
