I maybe should have been more specific,Having done it for the last 4 years there’s always one day when the Russians arrive en masse and go home over a period of weeks.Last year it was Sat 13 Jan but in 2006 nothing turned up on the equivalent Saturday (when Ian Allen did a trip!) ‘cos everything came on the following Wednesday!
I know slots have been requested on 29/12 plus 2/5/11/12 Jan….the question is which is the biggie.I’d have gambled on the only 2 consecutive days i.e.11/12 Jan but rumour has it 5th might be the one.I could do with deffo info.

All very interesting……….didn’t expect anything for BRS despite their sponsoring local ITV weather here with the slogan “The South Wests oiginal low cost a/l !!
Looks a bit like an attack on Eastern territory to me.

Must stick my oar in again!Mark L is telling it exactly like it is…..BA is a privately owned airline with a responsibilty to shareholders in an increasingly tough market and there is little market for long hauls from regional airports apart from for those airlines with massive hubs abroad to feed like Emirates, and some American carriers. His comparison with AF is also reasonable…..LH are about the only one operating long hauls from regional bases.
What he avoids saying, however,is that BA is near unique in abruptly pulling the plug on EUROPEAN and DOMESTIC routes from regional airports. The deal with Flybe with no committment to continue at least most routes and bases left places like BHX and BRS in the s..t.
All this is why I keep wondering why some of us enthusiasts see BA as somehow the one to have at our “local” and have such negative views about those airlines without which BRS/EDI/LPL/LBA/NCL/CWL…..yes even GLA would be shadows of their former selves.
I also detect a hint of irritation from the BA defenders (who I suspect work for them)……….could EZY/FR etc be rattling them?
Barry
Extremely good question Jet 22!If you were my age you’d also realise this is an airline that was privatised leaving them all the advantages being hitherto state owned had created like virtual slot monopolies at both major London airports, being GIVEN Concorde cos nobody would buy it and such a large network they could bend prices to see off any competition i.e.cut fares on any route with a much smaller compeitor ’til the competitor went bust.IMO they’re about to do that with the plan to operate first class only 757s which is a niche EOS/Maxjet/Silverjet thought thay’d sown up Easy for BA they have surplus a/c and can afford to weather the price bloodbath ’til the other submit.Michael O’Leary says he’ll retire when he’s seen off BA.Unlikely, but I’m rooting for you,Mike!!!!!

Have you forgotten that BA took the decision to close all it’s regional bases…………indeed actually sold the whole operation to Flybe? The ONLY exception was the MAN-JFK flight referred to and it was made clear this would remain the only one.I even wonder how long that will last. This is partly why (under another thread a few days ago) I expressed my concern that fellow enthusiasts were seemingly hostile to the likes of the budget carriers, given they could end up almost the only carriers at some regional airports.
Barry
Well said Si,I agree entirely but that isn’t really what I meant, which was addressed to those who had no intention of flying on the operator in question but just seem to want to see major carriers and have a “downer” on those airlines who have transformed the face of air travel after 50 years of cartels.Over 50% of the European total of budget operators are British and I think we should be proud of that, not waiting for them to fail so we can go back to paying BA (who s..t on BRS!) £500 to go to Milan or somewhere.BTW,I could list several majors who have had safety “issues” if I had time but Qantas for starters most recently.I’m not aware GSM have ever been accused of endangering passengers.Air Canada is famous for a 767 running out of fuel and landing on a small prairie airstrip with no good excuses.
Adam
People tend to forget BRS only has a 6600 ft runway which is hopeless for the sort of operations even the local protesters spout about. It also has no jetways (I think this a requirement of Emirates) and a cargo facility in Avonmouth!Even LGW suffers weight penalties on long haul with a 9500 ft runway hence VS preference for LHR.I think people should be realistic about future…..great as a base for budget carriers (who prefer buses and steps!!) and SOME European carriers due catchment area but a substantial range of long haul routes……never, without runway extension and massive terminal expansion. The year the cost of new terminal was first announced BHX budgeted more to simply build the improved area between main terminal and what was then the Eurohub
Barry
I agree Adam as I’d love to do a 4/5 day YYZ trip myself so a weekly charter not great! On a general basis I never can see though why spotters/photographers are so worried about the quality of an operator…………the rarer and more obscure the better I’d have thought. If all dubious airlines stopped coming we’d certainly lose Onur Air….at least GSM have never been grounded!I also can’t understand hostility to RYR…….they’ve enabled me to do more spotting cheapies abroad than I ever dreamt of………bring on a BRS schedule to equal STN,I say.

Not wishing to be unkind to posters so far but this is a “scheduled charter” like other airports incl Exeter have had this year and as far as I’m aware the GSM EXT flights have been reasonably OK.BRS hasn’t a cat in hell’s chance of getting a regular schedule by the likes of AC when much bigger airports can’t support it.I should think GSM chose the airport not vice versa and I imagine the authorities welcome the kudos of any new route particularly transatlantic. From an enthusiasts point of view would have thought GSM visiting was great and also I’d love to do a 737 over the pond…………less boring than the hundreds of heavies a day……..pity I believe it IS a 752,only stop DUB
Barry
I assume you’re in a car judging by your remarks. At Filton if u r facing north (towards M5) on dual carriageway there are several places to stop either side of the flyover particularly by the Britannia Cafe. The other side of road has opportunities as well incl the mouth of a new access road to the airfield.A bigger problem is there’s likely to be little by the roadside these days.
Lulsgate……coming from City take R turn by Airport Tavern off A38 before airport. After about a mile L into narrow lane called Cooks Bridle Path. This goes round end of 09 to a parking area.
Barry
Great shots, there in fantastic conditions but can’t help feeling the best one was not a Boeing or Airbus but the one that stayed too high!!
Barry
Many thanks for the most recent three responses………………James,it isn’t my real “local” so not an expert but Flybe certainly did some SAS maintenance……could LN-RDM simply be one that was with them at the time SAS decided to ground them for good?
Barry
Yes ……..I spotted that………….possibly resale then?
Yes you’re quite right….think it nightstopped in Valencia and as far as I’m aware was just another of the many “engineering” visitors…certainly no pax
Barry
Fantastic variety and BTW thanks for comments on mine.Where were u standing at Brussels to take these?
