good to see the old girl back on the ramp looking like she needs a new coat of paint. lots of very happy days and many stories thanks to her
this is great but I would love to see a clip of the ex Aces High Ju-52. I great times with her and it was a sad time when we packed her for Kermit
So yes I am British now living in France and yes I did mean Hobart. I would also look at the Horizon Class if it was fitted with a 5 inch gun but for me the thing with the Classes I like is that most have already been built under license
For me I would go for something like
4 Destroyer’s (Holbert or Type 45) 2 on each coast
14 Type 31’s ( Arrowhead 120) 8 Pacific coast and 6 Atlantic coast
12 90m River class fitted with a 57mm main gun and off board multi mission units to allow patrol and mine hunting 6 on each coast
7 SSK’s 4 Pacific coast and 3 Atlantic coast
2 Juan Carlos assault ships 1 on each coast
Loved the pic of QE2 with the US carrier and as much as I like the type 23’s the sleek lines of a type 45 would have been nice to see. also we have to remember that use of RAF crews off of these ships will be key for the UK
My dad was the first manager of the Squadron from 88 to late 90 and we had some great times as the site was being built and once it had opened so I think a book by Gary would be outstanding
For Gary the loss rate was hard and fast ( Peter – Norman- Hoof – Euin) to name a few but these four were key
I feel getting German or France to agree on a common fighter is hard but getting both to agree good luck it will only happen if France is ready to give up Dassault
Their time would be better spent reverse-engineering the F-5 or Mig-29’s with a view to having a good number zero time air-frames
I am going to make a prediction, for the foreseable future (lets say a decade) every European Country West of Ukraine, that is going to acquire new combat jets are going to a) order “Dave”, b) order a variation of Gripen and c) order some Vipers from AMARC, the main KPP being “size of budget”. The two exceptions will be France with the Rafale F4 and maybe Germany with the Tornado ECR replacement wich could go “Dave”, upgrade sensors/weapons for their Phoons, rebuild the Tornados and use them for the next fifteen/twenty years, a mix of the two/three options, or nothing at all.
I think you are bang on here. What will be interesting is how Stealth holds up over the next 10 to 20 years we already know that the latest ground radars and AEW can see aircraft like F-35 better than 10 years ago. For the UK this is less of issue as what F-35 offers is a modern capable carrier strike wing first and for most and stealth second. I hope what the German issue offers is a opportunity for a Typhoon replacement for the UK as well
its now called Carver Barracks but the airfield is still there and has the odd helicopter in and out for training and cadets
that will depend on if they want to replace the alpha jets with a new lead in type but I did say they will go with a every low number of F-35’s
It eats me up to say they will go with 34 F-35’s however did like the idea of a hi-low mix and if they went for 24 F-35’s and 26 FA-50’s the cost would be around the same giving them 50 jets instead of 34. The FA-50’s could be used for training- QRA/air-policing- and dropping bombs in low end conflict they could transfer 90% of the kit they hang off their F-16’s including targeting and ECM pods and allow new pilots time to learn before moving on to F-35
