I think I am right in saying that some idiot in the UK signed a contract that means the RAF can’t do any tanking not even with the new A400M’s which is mad as these could be used for refueling helicopters unlike the A330’s

But a NATO/ EDF tanker fleet of 15 to 20 KC-10’s would make life a lot better

    OR

    Retire all KC-10’s

Transfer all of them to asian/middle east/european allies and let them fork out the operational costs.

Btw is it feasable for the c-17 modified as a hose drogue refueller?

It is well known that Europe needs more tankers to replace old types and to take the pressure off the US if the US was to let the KC-10’s go a European tanker force of KC-10’s would be a good start

Not at this time but there was a photo of a Nimrod MR4A fitted with 4 storm shadow’s which could have been used as a long range stand off platform

The likes of Syria and Egypt will not see J-10B they will be lucky to get JF-17 however if one or both of them got 100+ JF17’s this would still give Israel a planning problem as it is a BVR type

I do like the sound of a Gripen trainer and if it was fitted with Boeing’s new cockpit lay out it could be almost perfect

I would agree the F4 is the odd one out as the rest are smaller single engine types however the thread is more about age and capability and not size and capability

as said we talked about this in the F4 v F1 thread and the only thing the F4 had over the F1 was it could carry more stores but it burnt a lot more fuel and had a longer tuner around time I am not saying the F4 is not an outstanding platform but F-1 MF2000 can hold its own when it comes to versatility

We have talked about this in the past and the Mirage F-1M’s & MF2000 and Kfir’s are also very capable platforms in there own rights

The one thing for me in all this is the French carrier’s operating in heavy seas with the cat and trap system as the US say we will launch them if needed but we may not get them back safely trying to catch a wire on a pitching deck is going to give even the best pilots trouble and down south there is no where to go if you can’t get back on this could lead to days when the french would have no air cover

Are the Perry’s adding to the fleet or replacing some of the standing fleet

For me Brazil should go for Gripen E/F 80 for the air force 10 from SAAB and the rest built in house and 20 sea Gripen’s built by SAAB as for the navy something like the Khreef Class could work and be built in Brazil

The Type 214 would be a good cheap fit @ $330mn each able to carry subharpoon has a crew of 27 and a Range of 12000 miles

as said by some Australia is not doing to bad yes the M1 tanks have not worked out but that is more to do with the company who over hauled them than the tank it self. I do think when you carry out a TRE at this time and try and look in to the murky future that the money can be spent a bit better given that now the RAAF is looking at operating two types past 2040 i.e F-18F/G and F-35A that a 50/50 split could be a more cost affective way ahead by dropping the F-35 fleet to 52 adding 20 F-18F to the 24 F’s and 12 G’ they could free up enough money to buy a much needed extra frigate and the RAAF would still have the most modern and powerful air force in the region for the next 20 years

because it is on a pretty chart dose not mean it will happen even if they go ahead in 2015 I still don’t see them going operational this side 2023 the UK will see F-35 around 2016 and don’t think they will be fully operational until 2020 i.e. Tornado GR4 OSD 2019
