Nic
I posted this Spit in post 7 on this thread

I visited HMS Seven in November when she was in London for poppy day as one of the River class OPV’s it was interesting to here at a part from crew change and taking on stores the River class are at sea some 340 days of the year on fishery and other duties stopping and inspecting fishing boats and ship every day it is also interesting to note that the river class are operated by the navy but paid for by the fishery department crews and all.
It seems to me at this time the one thing the Argentinean navy needs is time at sea to conduct training. Has there navy under taken any exercises with other countries in the last few years. I just think they need to have one destroyer and one corvette and two OPV at sea every day stopping fishing boats and keeping an eye on all shipping of interest
Stepping back a bit if you are looking to replace AMX/A-4 with home grown type is a project along the lines of JF-17 really to far with 25 years of aircraft engineering behind me I don’t see anything in it that Brazil can’t handle
As for future J-20 dose this mean they are dropping the need for real interceptor at this time. Lets face it the Royal Navy will not have a fully working naval strike wing until 2020/25

HMS Seven

Apologies Tempest.
It’s just that you came over rather jingoistically in the post, in a manner that was a carbon copy of a previous poster JonJames.
As you can see from other posters, he is remembered for this, and this alone. If you’re not him, I apologise.
No problem moving on. Would it be a step to far if Brazil- Argentina- Chile and other Latin American counties were to open up a new fighter program along the lines of JF-17- J-10B or Gripen they have done lots of good work on upgrade programs and the KC-390 project and this could give the region some independence
Wilhelm I tried to over look posts 106 and 131 as I feel in the main you have some good stuff to say but I have to say I am NOT HAPPY with being accused of being someone I am not. At all times and in all of my posts I have tried to stay on topic and give input I am always happy to take others opinions as with Fedaykin’s on the type 45 destroyer post 95 however these 2 post of yours are just a cheap shot with no balls I am more than happy for you to point out the untruth in my post 93 and take it from there.
As I have said any money Argentina spends would be best put to uses picking the best 3 destroyer’s 6 corvettes and 4 patrol boats and upgrade them the remaining destroyer 3 corvettes and 2 patrol bout would be run in to ground and paid off next an interim purchase of upgraded Mirage F-1’s would give the air force a highly capable multi role interceptor for air defence and anti shipping. But most of all the men and women of there armed forces need training that means time at sea for the navy better aircraft and time in the air for its pilot and multi force exercises to tie them all together
Of all the things Argentina is doing in a military sense at the moment reactivating its Diesel subs is rather worrying. If they start messing about in Falklands waters it will be very difficult to keep tabs on them. A Diesel sub in coastal waters is very difficult to detect.[/QUOTE]
However if detected in said waters and forced to the surface it could be seen as act of aggression by Argentina in the eyes of the world which they don’t need at this time. However a bit of cat and mouse might be good for both sides as long as it stays that way
The big question is what do you want a new fighter for. Air defence of your air space for many years or one war. SU-30’s are the best bet for your one war given that it is over the Falklands but if its the long term in a stable region then JF-17 or J-10 are a better bet due to lower operating costs. however right now with the need to sort out the Navy as well I still think they would be mad to turn down Mirage F-1 MF2000
but as said if Argentina was to get the Falklands then what would there politicians hide behind

If I had the job as leader of Argentina I would.
1. Offer the Chinese lucrative future oil deals if they would help us, equip the military, and do joint exploration with us. Increase defense spending 5+ percent over a few years.
2. Buy SRBms and maybe China’s new carrier killer missile. A ballistic missile threat would give the British nightmares trying to defend the Falklands. If not China then you could court North Korea and Iran for missiles.
3. Buy cheap AIP diesel boats to handle the Type 45s when they show up.
4. Find a Mistral class or small invincible class war ship. to be the flag of your fleet. along with cheap Chinese helos and sky-hawks. Buy Chinese corvettes. To bad they scrapped the 25th de mayo. she would have been a valuable asset.
5 lastly they should spend good money on S-300s

Ok lets look at this and after I have finished laughing and got off the floor we can get to work
Firstly you get your hands on Chinese kit for possible oil what happens when you don’t find oil. You have a big bill and no means of paying it big risk that your people may suffer for.
Second firing ballistic missiles from the main land would certainly bring retaliation from British nuclear subs with tomahawk and ballistic missiles against Argentina’s main land.
Next buying cheap AIP diesel boats will not stop a types 45 destroyer and if it could the British have nuclear hunter killer sub at would wipe out any diesel force that came out to fight .
The same hunter killer subs would have a field day with any carrier group that came out to fight and also British F-35’s and Typhoons would keep any MPA’s out of range of the carrier group also if it is a straight fight between a MPA and a Type 45 in open water my money is on the type 45 as the type 45 looks like a small fishing boat on radar and by the time the MPA had made it’s mind up its dead
And last of all the British armed forces are the most highly trained in the world at this time Argentina’s force’s are one of worst last year there sub spent less an 6 hour under water
The KC-390 looks as if it’s set to be the main tanker/transport for South America. Chile & Colombia have just bought second hand tankers (or used aircraft converted to tankers), but both of them, plus Argentina, Brazil & Peru are lined up to buy it, replacing or supplementing current transports &/or tankers.
Yep I would say so also I think the super Tucano has the market covered in the light attack department but if a new Pucara was to come along with a better payload and range it may turn some heads
If Argentina is looking to rearm I feel it should start by sorting out its Navy by upgrading its ships and naval helicopters with such types as 6 SH-60 Seahawks plus 2 more Eurocopter AS 555’s that could operate off the destroyers. At this time the super Etendard have been upgraded in 2009 by the use of parts from French aircraft but lack of spears are not helping. With these new and updated types Argentina should look in to joint operation of the Brazilian carrier on policing operations and disaster relief a joint carrier group would allow both Counties to take a step up on the world stage. Next the Air force needs new interceptor and I still think at this time Mirage F-1 MF2000’s are way forward as this type would allow them to join coalition and air policing operations which Chinese and Russian may not . And last but not least the army has taken what it has and completely reorganise it’s self already but at this time needs man power

In the end, many years from now, the Islands will still be free of Argentine oppression. They’ll remember the British as their family, and Argentina as aggressors.
That’s as maybe but the UK will never just hand them to Argentina and Argentina will never agree to UK ownership so in the end real ownership will come down to the people who have lived there for over 200 years and the only way that can happen is Independance
With the Argentinean debate having seemed to have moved to a new thread I would like to open up the question of how do we see the sale of light attack aircraft and other types such as tanker/ transport and helicopters as fighters are only one part of a air force

In the end many years from now the only way out will be political independence of the Inlands and a new State that is recognised by the UN at which time British forces could and should leave the Inland. British war ships could still use the Inlands to refuel and stock as they do in Malta it is the only way of all side saving face.
I guess the premise of the thread is assuming correct levels of funding for the Argentine armed forces.
2 squadrons of late model, long range Su-27/Su-30 derivitive.
Some tanker aircraft.
4 or 5 AWACS/AEW. Not necessarily high end/big airframed. A smaller Embaer/Saab type will do.
3 or 4 modern SSK’s.
Upgrading their marines and sealift/amphibeous capabilities. As mentioned, the single biggest factor in Argentina’s defeat in the Flaklands War was that they didn’t take the British threat seriously, and thus did not upgrade the facilities at Port Stanley airfield to operate their fast jet aircraft.
Thusly, they’ll need aircraft and facilities to operate over the area from the mainland, with tanker support.
Assuming the Islands are taken again, the Awacs/Aew would need to be based on the Island to extend radar coverage.
The modern SSK’s are far more effective in hindering/keeping honest any surface fleet sent to recover the Islands.A buildup along these lines, as well as annual exercises in Argentine waters rehearsing the attack plan, should be in place.
Any actual operation would be relatively well practised, and should coincide with a future conflict Britain inevitably will find themselves in, such as a possible Iranian scenario.
All the above is purely speculative, and purely my opinion.
I thus reserve the right to be wrong.:p
I think you have it about right it is what happened in Ireland in WW 1 when the British army was France it is not easy to disengage your army from a battle field move it half way around the world
When ever Argentina’s politicians are in the sh;t they press the Falklands button to hide the real problems that are going on if and it’s a big if they start to rearm in a big way the first thing they will need is someone to buy from second they will need to retrain and I feel this will need to be brought in from out side. All of this will mean that buy the time they are ready the UK will have it’s Carriers up and running all 6 type 45 destroyers the A330 MMR’s on line plus the A400M’s so not only would we be able to move a lot of men and equipment but also take more Typhoons at the same time as escort to the transports and then stay as air defence of the Inland
