Believe the P-40C had technical issues (both the C and F were being worked on in hangar 2 on Sunday morning) and the P-26 couldn’t fly in the crosswind (likewise TFC’s Gladiator & Nimrod). A great shame, but you can’t risk these things.

Are warbird shows personality-driven entertainments, or demonstration of history and intangible heritage? They can be all those, let’s just be careful it doesn’t become just one.

Certainly the latter to a greater degree, although the personalities definitely play a part. Seasoned airshow goers will likely have their favourite display pilots, based on how that individual flies a particular aircraft. I would, for example, be more enthused to see Pete Kynsey fly the Bearcat than the majority of other pilots because I know his routine and its trademarks (full aileron roll in the vertical, aileron roll at the apex of a loop, eight point hesitation roll etc.) and how well that demonstrates the aircraft to my tastes. I love warbird aerobatics, hence my appreciation of routines by the likes of Kynsey, Akary, Skilling, Grey and co!

As for the old Stephen/Ray duo… Yep, I have some recollections! Difficult to compare after so many years though. One thing I do know is that those two helped inspire my love of aviation – particularly historic aviation – and if children are nowadays similarly being inspired by pilots like Nick Grey, Frédéric Akary et al, that’s only a good thing.

That first Akary pass was immense! The aileron roll transitioned into a half cuban was also excellent. God love that man…

Having reflected on Legends over the last couple of days, I’d say that Nicky in the Gladiator is akin to Ray Hanna in the Spitfire or Stephen Grey in the Bearcat. Just a perfect combination of man and machine. My friends and I ended up outside on Friday night, watching Nick in the Gladiator and Stevo Hinton in the MkI flying in formation before Nicky flew a brief solo – including his trademark low-level 360, which he exited almost directly over us. Beautiful!

Yesterday will live in my memory as the best ever Bearcat routine I have ever witnessed.

It was pretty special. Hooning around at low level, a terrific combination of powerful yet precise aerobatics, punchy close passes and low “photo passes” for the photographers.

Likewise the two Corsair displays from Messrs Skilling and Smith were tremendous; something we may have been denied had the other two made it, to speculate. Swings and roundabouts!

Despite being battered by cancellations (Lightning, two Corsairs, two Spitfires, two Mustangs, two Ju-52s, Avenger, Morane and so on), I thought the show was terrific and I certainly had a cracking weekend. The atmosphere at Legends is genuinely awesome – like one big family, I feel.

The pre-show was a washout really, nothing flew on Wednesday and only the P-40F and Corsair flew very briefly on Thursday. Friday was better, with some ace flying from the Peashooter & Corsair after 4pm and some other activity from the Spitfire MkIs, Gladiator, Hawk 75 and P-40C saving the day. Never known the weather to impact so heavily on Legends, but they still managed a great weekend.

My spirits were pretty low on Friday/Saturday morning when only a couple of European visitors had arrived, but things came good in the end. The cancellations helped change the pace, with fewer adrenaline-fuelled tailchases and more solos. Personally, I loved it, as it meant we got to see aircraft like the Bearcat, Corsair, Hurricane & Moonbeam (amongst others) flying dedicated solos rather than being grouped in with other aircraft. And by god, there was some great flying! The Gladiator solos and pair routine was up there with the best things I’ve seen at Legends in 20 odd years of going. Pretty much all the flying was cracking, the only downers being the P-40s on the Sunday, which felt high and distant compared to what came before and after.

    See you next year…

I remember the morning of ’09 being absolutely dire! There’ve been a few shows where the rain has fallen just as the Spitfires are opening the show, only to clear into a fine afternoon. You never know how it’ll turn out on the day!

I understand from my man at Duxford that there’s been a fair bit of activity from TFC today, and the arrival of the Buchon & Spitfire MkXVI from Humberside.

The forecast for Thursday/Friday in particular looks bad, especially over mainland Europe. Hope that doesn’t affect too many visitors. That said, the forecast for Waddington was pretty terrible (rain all weekend was forecast at one point!) but I ended up coming away with sunburn having not been rained on at all during the flying display hours. Just goes to show you can never put too much faith in the weather men…

I’m rocking up on Wednesday, sure it’ll be a cracker whatever happens!

I’m sure it’s all in hand; didn’t Brooklyn Bum bowl up on the Tuesday in 2004? Likewise the I-15 if I remember correctly!

    That looks mint!

I’m at Duxford from Wednesday (what else are you gonna do?), would be cracking to see the first flight! If not, the two man advance party arrives on Monday. 😉

Any event that can be organised would be a bonus, but for my money, a repeat of the ‘Gathering of Warbirds & Legends’ format would be excellent (albeit, one assumes, rather costly) with historic aircraft flying in with the odd flyby on arrival/departure.

Fighter Meet was a part of my childhood and an important part of forming my love of historic aviation. Many happy memories spent at my local!

Four Mk.I Spitfires (a first since what, the 1940s?) and eight “others”, presenting almost the full lineage from I and PRXIX, with the possibility of a 13th in the form of the Seafire. That’s pretty special if you ask me! The baby Spits alone, regardless of what they do, will be one of the highlights I’m sure.

If someone could book some good weather, that’d be appreciated…

    P-40C début

First time a Peashooter has ever been seen in the UK

    Unprecedented four MkI Spitfires

    Super Constellation flying

    Flying Bulls trio

    Hellcat

Shame about the dozen odd Spitfires, three Corsairs and multiple Mustangs too…

The day when I look at a line-up like that and shrug my shoulders is the day I give up aviation and take up crocheting. I’m not quite sure what Legends has to schedule to please some people! I’ve been going since 94 and I’ve loved every show. You know what you’re getting. Big warbird set-pieces, a smattering of new or returning (usually after an absence) aircraft and badass flying. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
