If this is a choice unrelated to politics and if the Greek Economy has more resources for expenditure, I think one of the European contestants would be the way to go. Nevertheless, many things depend upon the role which these new jets will have to fullfill (i.e. air superiority? etc.). If you ask me, both the two European jets aren’t yet ready for multirole operations. On the other hand, F/A-18 E/F is a tested and mature platform with many of the technologies of tomorrow incorporated. I must note here, that Boeing officials keep referring to it as Fifth generation aircraft! Perhaps this is a marketing tric. Perhaps it is just a truthful fact. Nonetheless, till now, USN appears pleased with this aircraft.
By the way, I think that the small (not detailed) comparison between the existeed F16 Block52+ of HAF and that of a potential F/A-18 E/F aircraft purchase that comes below, prooves that the range gap between those two fighter jets is not that much great in favour of the F16… Actually, people who prefer the F18 as a choice, have confronted me in the past days with the argument that the US NAVY would not have opted once more for the E/F, if its range wasn’t already satisfactory enough. Taking for granted the high standards of US militants and the fact that 460 units of these aircrafts are scheduled for delivery prior the year 2012, I must say I am a bit sceptic.

How about playing mostly the role of an interceptor? To the best of my knowledge, HAF’s superior officers are looking for an aircraft in order to support the fleet of the 22 Mirage 2000 (the 25 MK2’s have not yet been received) that in most occasions is the one who intercepts the Turkish F16 over the Aegean. As far as strike capabilities are in concern, I think that HAF appears well beyond pleased with the capabilities of the latest editions of the F16 it has. If you ask me, I would opt for either EF TYPHOON or RAFALE (if F3 with AESA would be available) for the role of air superiority or interception. Yet, the price tag of aprx. 57$ mil/unit and the advanced technologies that F/A-18 E/F incorporates (similar to the ones of the European aircrafts mentioned) might well attract a contract.

HELLO PETROS. I READ IN AN ARTICLE LAST WEEK THAT HAF IS NOT SATISFIED WITH THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ICMS-2000MK3 OF THE NEW MIRAGE AND UNDER THIS AUSPICES SUGGESTED TO THE DoD NOT TO ACCEPT THE DELIVERY OF THE AIRCRAFT. IN THE MEANTIME THE DoD APPEARS TO HAVE ALREADY ACCEPTED THE AIRCRAFT… FURTHERMORE, THERE ARE RUMORS REGARDING THE POSSIBLE PURCHASE OF THE 12 QATARI M-2000 FOR THE GIVEN PRICE OF 150,000,000 $… I ALSO HEARD FROM A FRIEND WHO IS TOTAL FUN OF HAF THAT “EAB” HAS RECEIVED AN ADDITIONAL NUMBER OF 4 M-2000 TO UPGRADE THEM INTO -5s. DO YOU HAVE ANY RELATIVE INFO? thank U
Does anybody knows the latest developments on the U-214 case? Is there still an argument between Thyssen Corp. (HDW) and the Hellenic MoD?
Here are some pictures of the TOR-M1 in Cyprian Colours during a recent day / night exercise. š
All pictures are scanned from a local Greek defence magazine by others, Iām not sure which magazine published them.
HELLO ALEPOU. PICS COME FROM THE JULY 2006’s ISSUE OF THE HELLENIC DEFENCE & SECURITY MAGAZINE (PERIODIKO ELLHNIKH AMYNA&ASFALEIA). See pages 82-93…
No problem. For some reason I’m all about being proactive today š
It is good to have you here.;)
Two things.
1. For some reason you’re posting the same thing twice. Only click once on the “Post Reply” button!
2. To help keep the board a bit cleaner, I’m going to merge your threads into a new Hellenic Air Force News thread, so you can put all of your info in one place.
I ‘ve noticed too that the system posts my threads twice. I am almost certain that I do not double click the ‘Button’ but the result remains pretty messy. Thanks for your thorough response here…
BEST REGARDS.
HELLENIC AIR FORCE NEWS & DISCUSSION

P.S. Iām glad you found the Caps lock key. :diablo:
GEIA SOU ALEPOU! I LIKED THE TIP FOR THE LINK… INTERESTING MATERIAL…
That settles it then, the S-400 it should be!
What I have seen says that the S-500 is an effort to create a kind of ultimate AD/ABM system by using both the S-400 and the S-300VM componants and to replace both, but I havnt checked up in a while so I may be wrong.
IF YOU ASK ME I AM ALSO IN FAVOR OF THE RUSSIAN SYSTEM! YET, SHOULD BE THE ARROW II OF THE ISRAELIES BE AN OPTION AT ALL HERE?
I could be wrong but wasn’t the S-300 system purchased by the Greek Cypriat government but then the system had to be based on the Greek mainland to avoid a war with Turkey. If I remember correctly among other things the Turkish government had issues with the fact that the system could track and engage targets in Turkey.
Didn’t the Russians sail the Kuznetsov and a battle group in the med as a show of force to ensure the delivery went ahead.
THE CYPRIAN GOVERMENT HAS EXPRESSED ITS INTEREST FOR THE S-300 PMU1 (SA-10D GRUMBLE) SYSTEM BACK IN SEPTEMBER OF 1996. THIS INTEREST LED IN AN AGGREMENT FOR THE PURCHASE OF TWO BATTERIES IN JANUARY OF 1997. ON JULY OF 1998 THERE WAS A TEST FIRE OF THE SYSTEM IN THE AREA OF ASTRACHAN (perhaps my spelling here is incorrect). ON DECEMBER OF THE SAME YEAR, AFTER A MARATHON OF FOREIGN PRESSURE AND UNDER THE THREAT OF USING FORCE BY THE TURKISH SIDE, BOTH THE GREEK AND THE CYPRIAN GOVERNMENT, DECIDED THAT THE SYSTEM WOULD BE SET UP AT A LOCATION IN GREECE. FEW MONTHS LATER ON MARCH OF 1999, THE FIRST UNITS OF THE SYSTEM ARRIVED IN THE ISLAND OF CRETE, AT THE CITY OF HERAKLION AND THE 126 COMBAT GROUP FROM WHERE THEY WERE MOVED TO TYMPAKI, WHERE ON THE MAY OF 1999 THE 138 COMBAT GROUP WAS FORMED. THE 138 COMBAT GROUP IS DIVIDED IN TWO SQUADRONS: THE 11TH AND THE 12TH (THE LATEST IS BASED AT HERAKLION SINCE THE SUMMER OF 2004, AT THE 126 COMBAT GROUP). EACH SQUADRON IS GRANTED TWO TOR-M1 (SA-15 GAUNTLET) SHORAD SYSTEMS FOR EXTRA FORCE PROTECTION. THE CYPRIAN REPUBLIC, HAS ALSO RECEIVED SIX TOR-M1 SYSTEMS FOR ITS NATIONAL GUARD. THE CYPRIOTS, ALSO OPERATE BUK-1 (SA-11 GADFLY) SYSTEMS.
OK, thanks for the update. I must have missed the EMPAE decisions regarding FAC’s.
You are welcomed. I will try to scan few pics of the new ships and post them in the forum. For the history, the HN is planing to acquire 5 mine hunter ships (second hand ships) and two new HY56A type ships (this is gun ships) like those of class MAXHTHS (Open Sea Patrol Boats) within the following 5-6 years. These projects, are irrelevant to that of the 6 New Frigates…
