According to EMPAE 2006-2015, no major fighting ship procurement was planned other than 6 multimission/AAW frigates, if I’m not mistaken. Did the original contract for Super Vita’s cover +3 options?

The original contract for 3 ships had an option for another 2. This option was granted. Therefore, the HN receives or is about to receive 5 ships at this stage.
The Roussen (P67) on 20 DEC 2005
The Daniolos (P68) on 22 FEV 2006
The Christalidis (P69) on 8 MAY 2006
The Grigoropoulos (P70) due 2007
The Ritsos (P71) due 2007

The posibility of the new building for 3 similar ships is covered by the EMPAE of 2006-2015. Latest information, as published in local Defence Press, state that the HN is almost certain to opt initially for an additional two such ships and keep a third one as an option. In that way, the Fast Attack Boat Command (homebased in Amphiali area) will have 8 new Super Vita class ships, 4 reconditioned Combattante III and perhaps two refurbished (from its current fleet of 5) Combattante IIIB by the late 2014.

Aero Vodochody has been through very hard times and put a lot of hope in Greece for sale of its L-159. If Albatros really is out, than that means Aero got a heavy punch in the stomach.

I firmly believe that we are still at a very early stage to take into serious account any rumors or articles with regards this huge (from both an idustrial as a finacial point of view) military programme. I must note here that in the past few months, some of the same people who now say that L-159 is not a strong card, used to set as HAF’s favorite the M-346. The Italians, of course, have a strong presance here in Greece, both with their MoU with the Hellenic Airospace Industry (locally known as EAB: ELLHNIKH AERODIASTHMIKH BIOMHXANIA), as well as, through their role&participation in the C-27J SPARTAN programme… Nevertheless, this fact did not make less determined, Mr. Dennis Plessas, the current LM representative here, to put a lot of effort in promoting the KAI’s Golden Eagle in the past few days… Now, of course, I suspect that within the following days there are gonna be rumors and leaks that will generate articles (once more) in favour of this choice. Taking the opportunity, one mustn’t forget the BAE Systems and its HAWK AJT. If you ask me, I’ d say that we should expect to see a strong campaign over the coming months. Aero Vodochody is still in the game. However, even if Greece finally opts for another manufacturer, the emerging needs for new generation lead in trainer fighters around the globe will provide Aero with the opportunity to attract contracts from other clients. We mustn’t forget the fact that almost the entire European fleet of lead in training aircrafts is far too old, a parameter that by itself will lead European Airforces in the development of similar programmes like that of HAF…

No. Its is not my opinion. I lack the knowledge to make thorough judgements over that. It is what I just read in few local articles and hear from some friends who are affiliated with HAF. If you ask me, I really feel that in any short of a Military Programme, it is most that inapropriate to take into account opinions that do not come out of official leaps, as well as, considering rumors or tips of journalist that may have their own reasons to write articles in favour of one or another system. I am always a little bit of suspicious over that. Hence, I thought to open this discussion with people who share interests in Military aircraft in an effort to attract comments or tips in relation to this major programme, that are far from being biased. B.Regards.

HELLENIC AIR FORCE NEWS & DISCUSSION

THE HELLENIC AIR FORCE HAS EXPRESSED INTEREST IN ACUIRING 45 NEW GENERATION LEAD IN TRAINER AIRCRAFTS FOR THE IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENT OF ITS OLD T2E BUCKEYE FLEET. AMONG THE STRONGEST CONTESTANTS IN THIS ALMOST ONE BILLION US$ WORTH PROGRAMME, APPEAR TO BE THE ITALIAN AERMACCHI M-346, THE BAE systems HAWK AJT (Advanced Jet Trainer) AND THE KAI T-50 GOLDEN EAGLE (PRODUCED IN CLOSED COOPERATION WITH LM). L-159 IS AN OUTSIDER. YAK-130 (IN WHICH M-346 IS BASED) IS WIDELY THOUGHT NOT TO BE A PROSPECT AT ALL. ANY NEWS IN RELATION TO THIS PROGRAMME OR ANY OF YOUR THOUGHTS WITH REGARDS THE PROPOSED AIRCRAFTS, ARE MOST THAN WELCOMED. B.REGARDS

ARMARIS is going to suggest for the Hellenic Navy’s New Frigate Programme a FREMM (Fregates Multi-Mitions) type ship that will be able to conduct among others, extensive anti-aircraft and anti-missile operations, as well as, littoral combat operations. The type name of the suggested ship is FREDA. Main weapon system of this ship will be the ASTER PAAMS (Principal Anti-Air Missile System) with a combination of ASTER 15 (range 30km) and ASTER 30 (range 100+km), the later of which is capable of supporting operations of anti-ballistic defence. [PAAMS is a European programme similar to that of U.S. Standard. It is operated by DGA since 11/08/1999]. There are thoughts to offer the ship with the addition of the advanced weapon system SCALP NAVAL that is considered to have a range of 1000km! SCALP NAVAL can be fired via the VLS (Vertical Launch System) of the ship, the exact same VLS that will be employed by ASTER. Each vessel will be in place to carry 16 SCALP NAVALs.
Currently, published articles on local Defence Press, suggest that the HN favors the Armaris for its New Frigate Programme. LCF appears as an outsider. The same stands for the LM’s LCS. The Thyssen, stands even less chances, after the problems occured during the development of the 4 U-214 submarines. There is also, somehow, the impression that HN favors the Elefsis Shipyards, that happens to carry an MoU with Armaris (since the 25/10/2006). Yet,it appears to me a little bit strange for a Navy like the Hellenic one, to show such a lack of interest in ships like that of the Netherlands (LCF), especially if one take into account how close cooperation it has with Holland firms like that of the Signaal, systems of which had been recently purchased for its 6 Standards Frigate ships, its 5 VT Super Vita, its 5 Patrol Boats class MAXHTHS etc. It really sounds peculiar…

Number of MI-35 in operation with Cyprian National Guard

The Republic of Cyprus has initially purchased 12 MI-35. One of them was lost in a fatal accident.
