The plane/background at 29:25 is exactly the same as the one on page 79 of Roger Freemans “B17 Fortress” and that is labelled as Gremlin Gus II.
However the 323nd Bomb Squadron website states Carful Virgin was converted.

It was stored at Audley End for a while.

Big project – needs a lot of work to bring up to current standards.

Forgive me lack of knowledge on this subject but why is that? Has the bar been raised over the last 20 years? Or is it simply because you wouldn’t trust something thats been sitting around all that time…..

I guess I’m thinking that once a fuselage is restored thats job done…but then you have to take into account how it’s been stored etc.

It was the old polycarbonate helmets that could not be painted (Centurion was a popular make at the time). Fibre glass or modern materials are fine.

I seem to remember a variation of this in one of the old Air Ace Picture Library comics.

Something that has always puzzled me…..what about 20mm cannon shells fired at an aircraft that miss the target. I presume the fall to the ground but there is never any mention of this. If this is the case then they must be a potential danger?

The message does seem to be that you can win over a Russian spy if you buy them an American steak……
