    sealordlawrence,

I was at the paris air show yesterday and I had the opportunity to talk with a dassault’s engineer who made its entire career in this firm and was nearely retired.
I ask him a few questions about the osf. He told me that there are two firms working on the osf, sagem (IR) and thales (tv). apparently it is thales who will provide the whole new osf, but for the moment investments are on the modernzation of thales part of the osf. Latter thales is likely to develop the IR channel, but it will take time because it will be a new IRST (not a modernized one).

about power, I agree that I would alway ask more (the more the better…)
But the rafale demo I saw yeserday was awsome (very very dynamic and probably the best I saw from this aircraft), and when I look at it I can’t say it really lacks power. (I could compare to the F16, mirage 2000, SH, Typhoon, mig29OVT, and tornado)

my personal ranking for paris air show’s demos is
    -rafale
    -SH
    -typhoon
    -mig29 OVT
    -f16
-mirage 2000 ( a bit disapointed, very short)
    -tornado

another informative pdf about AASM capabilities.
you can learn that AASM range when fired at high altitude is 75km! and that it works fine for SEAD missions working with SPECTRA

the scenario is basically a plot to destroy a rafale during an international airshow at jakarta in order to make the rafale loose the competition…This must have been inspired by dassault’s folks…!:D looool
So now they can “exorcize”? singapore and korea!

    scooter

Why post them with a picture of the CdG?

I post pictures which are related to rafale. I thought that it was obvious that it was C models and that any confusions were impossible:D

Tmor: there are chances that you are right!

And AASM is a waste of money, replicating existing capabilities (JDAM, Spice) with a lag of 10+ years, when in the meanwhile new toys like SDB II are already on the way.

Distiller, AASM is like no existing weapon, and it is far more lethal than JDAM and SDBs. It also offer a greater tactical opportunities due to its booster and high manoevrability. (you don’t need to rely only on your own kinetics :altitude and speed)

thanks to its booster it can be fire at six different targets almost simultaneously with 90 degrees offboresigth capabilities (unique capability), desired angle of attack for optimum penetration (unique I think for this kind of weapon), and 50km+ range from altitude and 15km from low alt (which is unique due to its booster).

    Sagem Defence Security:

    Successful AASM firing
    Paris, May 28, 2007

On April 23, 2007, the DGA (General Delegation for Armament ) carried out the first ‘full firing’ (‘Tir Global’) of the AASM. This firing was carried out by an Air Force Rafale pilot.

The mission connected several firings at widely dispersed independent targets, including one at an ‘off boresight’ target, and also included the firing of one salvo of three AASMs. All of the targets were hit with the expected precision and the Rafale’s OSF (Optronique Secteur Frontal) allowed the pilot to view the impacts in real time and to present video of the firings at the debriefing.

The AASM is a modular weapon developed by the Sagem Defence Company (SAFRAN Group). It consists of a guidance kit and a range-extender kit which can be fitted to in service (dumb) bomb bodies. The AASM confers on these an increased range and a high degree of accuracy.

The three qualification firings of the AASM already carried out by a Mirage 2000N demonstrated a range in excess of 50 km from high altitude and 15 km from very low altitude with higher impact velocity and accuracy than required in the specifications. This full firing of AASM from Rafale represents the first multi-target air-to-ground of its kind carried out in Europe. Without equivalent in the world, the AASM brings new air-to-ground capabilities to the forces.

‘Full Firing’ (Tir Global) is the official term used to indicate a firing under operational conditions of several series AASMs from a series production, service configuration Rafale.
