By comparrison, how far did they get constructionwise back in the 40s with HMS Malta and her sisters before the plug was pulled?

Cant imagine Lightnings going up North with two missiles and a gat but massivley short legs, (I havent forgotten the F-8 did this) with out tanker support right on the DMZ.

Do you think if we’d been in Vietnam do you think we might have bought a few of the multi-role version sold to the Middle East or maybe even taken steps to beef up the weapons fit of the F6, Sidewinders, Sparrows, 4 Redtops? And what of the Harrier, I can’t remember off the top of my head whether the USMC used its Harriers in Vietnam, I assume they must have.

Obviously, if the UK had been involved the US wouldn’t have lost 😉

Depending on whether one of the things Britain would have been allowed to bring to the table was our experiences in dealing with similar conflicts in Borneo and Malaya, I agree. FWIW I don’t agree with the Vietnam War, primarily because the South Vietnamese government was a corrupt, right-wing dictatorship, the tactics used/rules of engagement by the Americans seemed to leave them fighting with one arm tied behind ther back and lastly a large proportion of US soldiers were conscripts, some of whom from the Deep South involved in the civil rights movement were drafted into service for cynical reasons.
The purpose of this thread is merely speculation on the impact (or lack of it) of British military hardware and personnel and whether the events unfolding in Vietnam would have influenced defence policy/procurement during the sixties and early seventies. In my opinion RAF Lightnings equipped with 30mm cannons in addition to Red Tops would have aquitted themselves well in the air war and FAA/RAF Buccaneers and Harriers would have made a positive contribution interdicting Vietcong supply lines and dealing with SAM sites.

If it’s CTOL, why not get E-2? Flies higher, further, faster, with a much better radar than a V-22 can lift. The only reason I can think of for buying an AEW V-22 would be to operate off a STOVL carrier, LPH, LHD, etc.

Good point, or maybe if it was feasible we could dust off the plans for the AEW aircraft that was being developed back in the 60s to fly from the CVA-01s.

Country your carrier is for: UK
    No. of carriers: 3
    Type of carrier: CTOL
    Weight: 45-50,000 tons approx
    Length: 850 feet approx
    Width: 170 feet approx
    Power supply: Gas Turbine
    Number of Aircraft: 41
    Type of Aircraft: 24 F/A-18E, 4 F/A-18G, 4 Osprey V22 AEW, 1 Osprey V22 COD, 2 Sea King SAR, 6 Merlin ASW
    Defensive weapons: SAMs, BPDMS etc.

Smaller than CVF and with at least a dozen fewer aircraft. Three selected so that 1 is in refit/reserve, 1 working up and 1 in full commission. Reason for choice of airgroup all off the shelf, so hopefully cheaper.

Ideal would be 3 CTOL configured CVFs with the same airgroup as above except 36 F/A-18Es instead of 24.

I was always under the impression from interviews with pilots in books and documentaries that the Lightning was a good dogfighter and that with the introduction of the Typhoon the RAF was getting back to single-seat dogfighters after a 20 year absense.

This is just awesome. It’s meant for speed.

I read once that they were originally going to use the Dracken to stand in as the MiG 31 Firefox in the film of that name but weren’t able to secure one.

Anyone else think it ironic that it was a Russian ship that transported the parts.

Perhaps they are going to break her up, starting with the island.

Latest video, it’s the one where all of those cool pics were taken from:

    http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-events/rn-live/all-news/queen-elizabeth-class/*/changeNav/6568

Did anyone else notice in the end credits reference to a narrator but during the presentation all I noticed was music. Did anyone else here narration? Oh and by the way, the ships were rather cool, just a pity they weren’t being called Eagle and Ark Royal. Who do we write to about trying to get their names changed or could we start an online petition?

Those are great images. Some of the shots even looked real, a pity they couldn’t work up a few of CVA-01, I’d love to see what that would have looked like in the flesh so to speak. I do have a question though, what are those displays on the islands? They look like the electronic timetables you get in railway and some bus stations?

Nimrod, I hope so! Though ships and aircraft are different we mustn’t forget TSR-2 was cancelled with hardware in the air.

Quite right and indeed if memory serves, many of the 15 carriers designed during the latter half of the War – 8 Hermes, 3(or 4) Audacious and 3(or 4) Malta had begun to be built before the axe was wielded on all but 6 of them. By the way there will according to the BBC website be a ceremony today in Glasgow Govan to mark the beginning of construction. Perhaps people who live near here and who frequent these boards could pop down to the yard and takes pics every now and then (security and access permitting of course) to show the progress.

CVA-01 was designed, as with all RN carriers, to strike its entire airgroup below decks. We dont operate with permanent deck parks as is USN policy.

Actually Jonesy I don’t wish to divert the thread too much but I’m not sure about all of the airwing being struck down below in CVA-01’s hanger. It was certainly true in the propeller and early jet age that British carrier airwings could be accommodated in the hanger(s), but by the 1970s According to Chapter 13 page 154 of Michael Burns F-4K and F-4M Phantom II Osprey Air Combat, Ark Royal’s hangers contained – Upper: 8 Phantoms, 6 Sea Kings & 3 Gannets Lower: 8 Buccaneers. The remaining 6 Buccaneers, 4 Phantoms and a Gannet generally the servicable ones had to be parked on Deck.
According to Chapter 16 page 343 column 2 of Norman Freidman’s British Carrier Aviation the dimensions of CVA-01’s Hanger were 660 ft x 80 ft x 18ft. From various sources the ships would have carried 41 planes and 6-8 helos ie 18 Phantoms, 18 Buccaneers, 4-5 AEW/COD aircraft plus the Helos. Accordint to the 1968/69 edition of Jane’s All The World’s Aircraft the folded length and width of a Buccaneer was 52ft x 20ft. The Phantom’s according to Michael Burns’ aforementioned book was 51.5ft x 27ft. Bearing in mind that the aircraft couldn’t be parked so that they were physically touching so that they could be worked on and moved about, I estimate that depending on the combination of aircraft you could perhaps store all 18 buccaneers (parked in 6 rows of 3) plus a couple of Phantoms or Helos or AEW/COD. I would guess you could have 24-30 aircraft in the hanger at any given time.

also something to consider is that the need for a replacement CTOL naval fighter in the mid 90’s would have changed MoD’s mood towards EF Programme so who can tell whether a Naval P.110/120/ACA would replace them or late F-18C perhaps F-18E at a push

If I understand the origins of the Rafale correctly if there’d been a requirement for replacement C-TOL RN aircraft, the French might never have left the Typhoon programme and Typhoons would be flying from CDG. The increased number of orders for the FAA plus the French might have lead to a smoother development and earlier in-service date (another reason for the French withdrawl from EFA)
