Colombia Air Force presents its newest trainer, the T-90 Calima

    http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/802/t90calimafac.jpg

The Colombian Air Force presented this Wednesday its new T-90 Calima training aircraft, the first of 25 aircraft produced for the training of pilots of the Air Force, a project that aims to save costs and break into the business of military aircraft sales.

Colombia currently trains its pilots with T-34 Mentor who entered the country in 1954, which are obsolete, according to General Julio Alberto González, commander of the Air Force.

The Air Force plays a important mission in the fight against drug trafficking and guerrilla warfare in this South American country plagued by violent internal conflict over 45 years that claims thousands of lives.

Gonzalez said the project, with an investment of $ 10 million, aims for the possibility of producing other aircraft and export to nearby countries in the future.

“The Air Force made a strategic decision to change and build its own trainers, rather than go out and buy ready-made technology. We decided to enter into the construction of our own aircraft,” said the official.

“It’s a light aircraft from composite materials making it extremely economical, it will be able to train our pilots at a lower cost but with the latest technologies,” he said.

All aircraft, which should be operational in late 2012, are built on a base in the municipality of Madrid, in the department of Cundinamarca, in the west of Bogota.

Colombia bought the licenses to manufacture and design company U.S. Lancair International.

The country also recently signed an agreement with Brazil that opens the possibility to participate in the construction of KC-390 transport aircraft for the military.

Colombian Air Force Kfir TC-12 Jet Fighter Crashes

    http://www.aviacol.net/images/stories/FAC3005.JPG

The plane was on the rural area of St. Helena’s Opón. It was on a reconnaissance mission.

The incident occurred at 1:45 pm when the plane was on a reconnaissance mission of the work for the eradication of illicit crops, that the police and the army were doing in the south of Santander.
A statement from the Colombian Air Force (FAC)said that, “search and rescue groups of the institution recovered unharmed two crew members.” The statement said the two crew members made “the procedures according to the manuals and both safely ejected.”

According to Colonel Mario Pedroza, commander of the police in Santander,
“We do not know if it was a mechanical failure which caused the accident. The place where the plane crashed is inhospitable, remote and very cloudy,” Pedroza said the colonel told a news conference.

It should be noted that the device is stricken aircraft with registration FAC3005 of TC-12 version, which had recently arrived in the country as part of the purchase and modernization in Israel of 24 Kfir supersonic fighter bombers and a multipurpose aircraft KC -767. Lot of which other aircraft with the same specifications had an accident in the city of Cartagena in 2009 (FAC3004) and also mean total loss of the aircraft.
These unfortunate and consecutive accidents leave many questions in the air, as the stricken aircraft are coincidentally those who have come from Israel, which in theory are supposed to have less use and are in better condition than those who are permanently operated in Colombia by the FAC for 15 years.
