Some interesting World War II history regarding oil extraction at this location in my neck of the woods http://dukeswoodoilmuseum.co.uk/History.htm
Fascinating story TwinOtter. Interesting to note that oil was transported to Pumpherston to be refined-that refinery was part of the shale oil industry here.
For anyone interested to know more about the early days of shale as an energy source, this little link tells some of the story http://www.scottishshale.co.uk/HistoryPages/Biographies/JamesYoung.html
Trumper, most of them have been landscaped and a lot of the burnt shale used in the foundations of buildings, at least one shopping centre I know of and the M8 motorway. There are three near where I live, one is overgrown and if I remember there are some rare wild plants up there. One is currently being gradually removed-this link should show it- http://www.flickr.com/photos/34904785@N03/7236666290/in/set-72157629834846482 The other one is popular with walkers, myself included-you can see for miles from it.
I live in a shale area-matter of fact the first oil boom in the UK started with the extraction of oil from shale round these parts and we have some massive red spoil heaps to mark the fact.
Good luck with your studies Axel.
I have no problem with fracking provided the process is properly risk assessed and regulated.
Me too. Perhaps you could elucidate Blackadam?
Given the battering the weather has given some areas over the past few weeks I wonder if anything interesting might have been washed up somewhere along the coast?
110 years since first controlled flight and just over 10 since you could fly the Atlantic in 3 hours…..
Might i suggest an antidote? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG302YjjP38
