RE: Can anyone identify this painting?
Its “Pinnochio” by Philip West.
It depicts a raid on an aqueduct on the Dortmund Ems Canal in August 1940 by Hampdens of49 Squadron. Flight Leitenant Roderick Learoyd, the Captain of “Pinnochio”, won the Victoria Cross for his determination in pressing home an attack on such a well defended target. None of the crew was hurt in the attack.
The story is told in the excellent book”Classic RAF Battles from World War One to the Present” byMichael Armitage published by Brockhampton Press.
It contains prints of this and other fine paintings depicting famous raids and battles, and full descriptions of what each painting is all about. Well worth a look if you can get your hands on it, it is very readable.
Hope this helps.

RE: Airshow Irritations!
That might be “pushing the envelope” quite far, Maverick!
RE: Airshow Irritations!
Aye- and for all its over the top stunts and effects, it just doesn’t have the kudos of Goldfinger, Thunderball et al. Yup, I know its getting away from the forum business, but I just wanted to air my view.
RE: Scottish
Found it!
The book is by Jim Hughes and its original date 1991, with reprint in 1999.
The reference to the crash doesn’t give much detail- only that it came down in December 1945, killing the crew. I presume it came from Kinloss as its in that section of the book. Hope this is helpful.
RE: Scottish
Ecxcellent photos Keith. I’ll look it up and get back to you.
RE: Scottish
The Watchtower is particularly atmospheric-and spooky. I was particularly interested in the article in the current FlyPast on the 190 recovered from Norway that shot down one on the Beaus on Black Friday.
The book-“A Steep Turn To the Stars” I bought in Elgin a couple of years ago gives a very good rundown of the mission. It also provides details of all the airfields in the north east and their histories. Well worth a look over.
RE: Scottish
My ambition is to retire to Lossiemouth and buy a house in Prospect Terrace overlooking the vast, sweeping bay to Garmouth, spending my days cycling around the airfields, both live and abandoned and watching the jets manouvering. I visited Dallachy this year, and standing at the runway intersection, looking down the potholed concrete in the late evening, I could almost feel the throb of the engines of the Beaufighters long departed as they headed out over the North Sea.
Youre a lucky man indeed to live where you do.

RE: Airshow Irritations!
Didn’t Bond, James Bond manage it?
RE: Airshow Irritations!
They only fly because they’re so ugly the earth repels them.
