Very nice to see her progressing so fast – look forward to seeing further reports and then of course… Just think, this lot here might even ask you whether it’ll be at………. :diablo:
I’ve even emailed a link to my girlfriend. Should I be worried that it’s SHE who collects the Biggles books in this relationship?
Adrian
You’re in good company Adrian. My wife’s just been prompted to read Biggles Learns How to Fly. Matt, we might have to rebuild a Farman Longhorn next!!
It was released in 1986 Rob – erm, not to much acclaim!
TT
I think one look at the film’s advertising poster about says it all!
Still, I reckon a taxiable Vickers Gunbus replica and a flying BE-2 replica are going to look pretty good on the grass at Sywell next year!
When I was a kid, Biggles books were classics, everyone was into them.
I’ve always been surprised that no-one has ever produced a truly classic Biggles film, yes, I know why, doesn’t appeal to Hollywood backing, however money was sunk into the embarrasing Biggles film that was eventually produced.
.
Yes I agree, the 1970s ‘made for TV’ offering was, you might say, of it’s era!!
Production delays meant that “Biggles Sweeps the Skies” was never completed, but the fact that Universal went to the trouble of not only commisioning the BE-2 replica, but also a pair of Aviatiks as well, indicated they were pretty serious. A classic ‘what if’.
As far as we know, the only filming of the BE was the archive shots you’ll see on Monday night, plus some shooting carried out in 1971 for the BBC series “Wings”. If anyone knows of, or has, anythng else, we’d be delighted to hear from them!
Clearly semi-scale :diablo:
Yep, but its pretty useful stuff.
I’ll still be checking my F215 etc., (not to mention the windsock!) before getting the aeroplane out though!
Good news SB! While I know there has been some criticism of access to parts of the museum recently, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes.
Some great information and images on C G-W. A fascinating visionary who deserves greater prominence.
Hmmm. Blue Max. If we add another two bays to the BE’s wings and stretch the fuselage a little – a GW 18 replica perhaps??
His hangar is still standing adjacent to the RAFM at Hendon!
….And one of these days the RAF Museum might even open it to the public!
(Sadly never yet when I’ve attempted to visit!!!)
It’s possibly a bit too far South, certainly needing a couple or three hours driving each way from Tours, but you could consider the Conservatoire de l’Air et de l’Espace d’Aquitaine, at Merignac, just outside Bordeaux.
Took these on a trip to Ireland last August. The Luton Major attended the Birr Fly-in and the Luton Minor was taken at the superb airfield at Kilrush.
I remember ‘SML from when she was based at Bodmin about 30 years ago.
Regards,
Derek
Thanks for the pics Derek. Anyone have any idea why Luton Majors still seem to be regarded as flyable in Ireland and Australia, while here in the UK I understand that the stressing was deemed inadequate?
Also Derek, if you remember G-ASML in her time at Bodmin, can you throw any light on the story behind this picture?
Thanks Armwaver for the AAIB link. Sorry to hear of the dammage to ‘TKH. By coincidence I spent yesterday stripping, checking and regreasing just these items! They are a known Luton Minor weak point with about four incidents reported in recent years. Although there is a reinforcement mod, I still check them on mine at least twice a year!
For Lion Rock, a picture attached of the Jenny Wren, G-ASRF. It was built in Hatfield in the early 1960s and I think, currently resides in the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton near Bungay.
The attached pic was I think scanned from a period Air Pictorial or similar. It was on the Luton Minor website, http://www.lutonminor.co.uk, run until recently by Mike Edwards, although it is currently offline. I’m just in the process of taking over the running of the site, so watch this space!
Glen, love the pic of the Aussie Minor. Is that the newly restored one that just made its first post-rebuild flight?
Oh boy, I can’t wait for April 1st!!
I’ve got a feeling there was some serious ‘finger trouble’ in the main control room at Channel 5 last night. Like playing the wrong videotape!!
It seemed to me that the first part of the programme was the ‘Fighter’ programme from episode one, then there was some frantic button pressing and the first commercial break……
No doubt about then someone said “Don’t worry, just switch the tape to the Bomber programme, no-one will notice”
From the lack of response on this thread, no-one did – shame on us!!!
Just reposted the first ten in a more viewable format.
Here’s the others………
Isn’t the ‘Gadfly’ autogyro now at Weston Super Mare?
I’ve been meaning to dig these out and post them for some time. Taken at Southend Museum in July 1974. I’m sure the aeroplanes have all been discussed at some length already so I won’t name check them all again. The cockpit shots are the Anson XIX and ex-RAE Beverley.
I’m amazed that TT hasn’t jumped in to offer space at the Sywell Museum!
