Many happy returns Melvyn. Sounds like a heck of a party!
The 10′ span Model DC3 used in Airline (made from the Inwood Plan) has turned up recently at a Large Model Association event, in it’s original markings.
I’m sure that ‘Blue Max’ will put us straight on it, as I suspect it was ‘Uncle’ David Boddington that built and flew the DC-3 model for Airline.
He also built the BE-2 and Fokker models that were used in the BBC series ‘Wings’ – remember that?
All I’ve seen are some short exerpts, including the opening credits. These feature the models intermixed with the BE-2c replica, heading stage left off the runway on full right rudder, in an incipient ground loop, no doubt after hitting the camera helicopter’s rotor wash!
thanks
You could build your own website.
I’ve never heard of a website about the Luton Minor, you could be the first one with a website. As far as I know, my website is the only Taylor Monoplane website in the world.
BTW, how long do you own G-ASML?
Hi Taylorman.
Thanks, there is already a Luton Minor website http://www.lutonminor.co.uk, but Mike who runs it seems to have a lot of other things on his plate at the moment and it hasn’t been updated for a while. I’ve dropped him a line to offer assistance in getting it back up to speed.
I’ve owned G-ASML for just over two years now and have been flying it for 18 months, for the last year out of Bicester. I actually bought the aeroplane before I had my PPL, which I only gained in May 2004. I always seem to do things backside first!
I can certainly recommend the Luton as a great first step into classic aeroplane ownership, although a two seater would probably help with gaining confidence faster, as on your early cross countries it would be handy to have someone else to discuss things like “wherethe heckarewe?” and “is that a 747?” !
Steve
Got me too. April fool or not – nice one!
It was very exciting to fly alone for the first time.
You bet! And just wait till you line a Taylor up at the end of the runway for the first time. First flight in a single-seater is like the first solo all over again!
Nice Taylor site too. We really ought to get the Luton Minor one revitalised a little as well!
Well this local forumite already has way too much of his own stuff to look after, without taking on anyone elses commitment…
Likewise. I felt quite safe sitting down here in Buckinghamshire……..
No drawings. But if you’re anywhere near Northampton, we’ve got one in lots of pieces that you can draw, photograph, measure……………
A friend of mine operates a Taylor, although not a PC. But, if there’s anything specific you want, let me know and I’ll ask him.
It seems a very straightforward and ‘honest’ aeroplane. The Taylor certainly offers a higher performance on an equivalent VW engine than my Luton Minor! I think Steve’s cruises at 75-80kts at around 2,800-3,000rpm (as opposed to 55-60 in the Luton!). We both seem to average about 3gph fuel consumption.
The only thing I have heard from some other Taylor owners, is that monitoring speed control on approach is critical. Get too slow turning finals and the VW probably won’t have enough oomph to drag you back onto the right side of the drag curve in time.
The stall comes in with a bang (I think at just under 50kts but I may be wrong) and it usually comes with a pronounced wing drop, so low and slow could really ruin your day.
Other than that though, and that could be said for a lot of aeroplanes, it looks like a really nice machine!
Let’s hope he looks after it properly.
Why don’t some local forumites suggest to Chris that they help look after the aeroplane……in exchange for free beers of course!
I use Notampro and find it excellent, with one big BUT….
If there are multiple NOTAMs for a single location, it only highlights the first one. The others are there in the text, but randomly scattered in the order the CAA (bless ’em) process them.
For example, the NOTAM for Blenheim air show earlier this year, highlighted the freefall drop at 16.15, but didn’t highlight the full NOTAM for the afternoon-long airshow, the additional NOTAM for the Red Arrows, or the fact that Oxford Airport was effectively closed from 13.30 !
I have e-mailed a comment to NOTAMPRO on this, but haven’t heard anything back, so I guess its still the same.
I’m amazed that Taylorman hasn’t leapt onto this yet!
(congratulations on the first solo Taylorman!)
His postings always have links to the following……..

Let us know how you get on!
Wow, a busy week. I’d better start negotiating my pass outs from ‘she who must be obeyed’!
Lovely stuff Darren.
The Edwardian formation is just lovely..and the Hawker duo…and the JP …..and ….and…
You may not like the new section – but I sure as heck like you contributing to it!
what is Spt looking at on the Tower?
I reckon he’s lining up a ‘pot shot’ at all the people on the wrong side of the hedge!
A great show, in particular one of the best Spitfire displays I can remember seeing anywhere in recent years. It was the perfect finale to OW’s 2005 season.
Pierre Clostermann’s “The Big Show” gives it another viewpoint. That of a Free French Air Force pilot, flying Typhoons etc through D-Day. A classic.
