Talking of film flying, will try to dig out a picture I’ve got somewhere of Derek Piggott doing the ‘under the Bridge’ stunt with the Fokker Triplane replica for the Blue Max. I seem to remember they needed something like 17 takes!
In the meantime, just dug out this one of a Sunderland being ‘demonstrated’ at Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Maybe not the lowest, but serious added points for having two props feathered!
Sorry – it was you was it? Combination of thundering VW horsepower, inadequate cloth helmet and icom adds a new dimension to ‘line of sight’ radio communications!
But as ‘Arfur’ says: “If they won’t let you use a phone and drive, why should you have to use a radio and fly?”
Pics from Solent Aviation / Luscombe / Pietenpol & Autogyro Fly-in
The star was the recently restored foster-Wilkner GM1 Wicko.
Good to meet G-ASML as well.
Good to meet you as well Paul. Congratulations to all at Popham on a great fly-in. Well worth missing the Vimy (and Melvyn) at Turweston, to join in.
See you next year!
PS. Has Arfur paid for his petrol yet??
Many thanks and congratulations to all at the VAC for a great day.
Sorry Arfur and I disappeared early, but we were ‘double booked’ with the Popham fly in too. Thankfully the clag over Oxford had lifted and we wound up with the perfect afternoon of flying and ‘chopsing’ at both airfields!
Anyone who was at the WLAC Families Day at White Waltham last Saturday, knows the ‘Chitty’ car can fly. Somebody was happily flying a r/c scale model through the afternoon!
In response to ‘Arm Waver’, the ‘Chitty’ airship was a replica Santos Dumont type and was flown a few times by Derek Piggott for the movie, who described its handling as ‘moderately dangerous’. I seem to remember it was eventually destroyed when strong winds blew it from its tie down and into trees.
It did most of its flying around Turville in Buckinghamshire, as the ‘Professor Potts’ windmill is above the village. Incidently the same village now doubles as the Vicar of Dibley’s Parish!
Final useless fact of the day. Did you know that the original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a Maybach aero-engined Brooklands racing car, was originally named after a rather dirty RFC song!
October 1970 (I think). Teesside Air Show, p-ing with rain, clag to the deck, and Ray Hanna does an entire display with MH434, never above 100 feet, always within the airfield perimeter. It would still hugely impress me now, but to a plane-crazy 13 year-old? Awesome!
Interesting comparison.
Just filled up the Luton Minor at Bicester. Windrushers Gliding Club member’s rate £1.05 per litre.
Filled up the car at Bicester services at £ 1.08 per litre.
Hey, flying’s just got cheaper!!
£1.16 per litre now at W.Waltham- No wonder the AN2’s moved out !
Might be time to think about mogas, it is just about worth the hassle now.
Surely you can’t be complaining too much, with your quiet, thrifty Cub!
While W Waltham’s famed for its ‘Gucci Gas’ as an American friend put it, I still don’t fancy the risk of sudden silence from the likely extra risk of carb ice or fuel vapourisation that Mogas offers.
If the Cub’s too thirsty for you, I’ll swap rides with you, with the 2.5 gph Luton Minor!
Thanks for the tip. Will get in touch with Francois to get a copy (I bet he winds up selling me a subscription!)
Not quite in the same league, but I’d love to know the story behind this Luton Meinherr!
(Thanks for the piccie Propstrike!)
Alors. D’accordant a mons Silhouettes d’Avions (Edition d’Avril 1917) c’est un Samson-Moineau, avec un seul moteur (Salmson) et deux helices.
Voila!!
(Ho-he-ho, vive la liberte, un grand vin rouge si vous plait, I speet on your Yorkshire lamb etc.)
You beat me to it Damien.
Sywell’s pumps are also available out of hours and there are pumps dispensing both 100LL and MoGas in case you have one of those things that sounds like a Crazy Frog ringtone.
It looks lovely – certainly very tempting.
I did hear that the first UK example was quite badly damaged earlier this year after an engine failure on takeoff near Thame in Bucks.
I hope both aeroplane and pilot are airworthy again, or soon will be. Any news?
Thought of another couple of possibles:
1. Dr Wallington P. DeWinters McGillicuddy Walters (aka Paul Walters – Wogan’s radio producer – yes, I know I am sad…..)
2. Derek Griffiths – the actor who used to present Playaway many years ago. I seem to remember him doing a piece to camera whilst flying a Robin of some description in the mid/late 70s.
Derek Griffiths used to be a Tiger Club regular in their Redhill days, and helped present their video “Tigers Tails” or something similar (thanks for offering me the loan of it the other night Propstrike!).
He (Griffiths not Propstrike) co-presented that programme with fellow Tiger Moth pilot, the late Christopher Reeves of Superman fame.
As for the FE8 its flown all most every weekend weather permitting. If their is any request of photos let me know I plan on going up soon.
Cheers

You bet there is. If only to make us envious!
