I think the Hunter is a Navy FRADTU (Fleet Requirements and Drogue Towing Unit) aeroplane which in the early 1970s was based at Bournemouth Hurn. I suspect they operated some Sea Vixens too.

Certainly the treeline in the background of both Pics looks a bit like the South side of Bournemouth.

    Any other thoughts?

Lovelly shots Niall, like many others, I didn’t spot the SE-5 landing but at least it was controlled, so well done to the pilot! I still havn’t proccesed my shots from this show, I just don’t seem to get any time!

Great shots Niall. Given that gusting cross wind, I’m not surprised at the SE-5a dropping (or raising) a wing at an inconvenient moment. I was gobsmacked at their safely flying so many light wing loading aeroplanes in the conditions. Respect!

If the SE-5a was that lively, just imagine what it must have been like in the Avro Triplane, the 504K or the Cygnet!

Many, many thanks everyone. Really appreciate seeing these!

I’m going to pass on your message to Barbara too Hashdef. I knw she’ll really enjoy that. Keep an eye open for her ‘new’ Luton, G-AXGR, complete with thundering 36-bhp, two cylinder, JAP power. (The last word is used advisedly)

    Thanks again!!

A great writer, right up there with Saint Ex, Ernest Gann, Cecil Lewis and Richard Bach.

I’m sure I’m not the only person here who was inspired by Bax Seat and his many other articles.

Anybody got those wonderful reports he wrote of Reno Air Races in the 1970s, and riding with Bob Hoover?

He’s thankfully left a lot for us to rmember him by. Nuff said.

Flaps are an academic issue on a Luton. Approach speed is only 40kts and with its thick wing section it comes down like a parachute with the throttle closed.

If you need to lose more speed, the square-section fuselage is more than enough of an airbrake if you sideslip.

I can sympathise with you Melvyn on your handbook’s lack of checklist. Here’s the comprehensive checklist on the back cover of the original JAP-engined Luton Minor pilots notes!

Forget the banner-towing. I want one now!

Propstrike – this could even be more desirable than a Cub!

    But then again……..

    Old Sarum?

Doesn’t look like Old Sarum’s hill top location either to me.

The Fairey Long Range Monoplane, on right, made its record-breaking flight to India from Cranwell in 1929. (A world record for flying in a straight line – 4130 miles in 50 hours – now that must have been boring!)

    Could it be Cranwell perhaps?

I’m surprised this classic hasn’t been included yet 😉

Ray Hanna, flying under Winston Bridge, County Durham, for the filming of Piece of Cake, 1988.

(from the book “How they made Piece of Cake” – photo by Herbie Knott)

It’s a heck of a picture, but the wide-angle lens doesn’t really show how narrow that bridge really is. I doubt that there were six feet of clearance on either wingtip!

Anyone in the area should turn South off the A67 Darlington-Barnard Castle road onto the B6274 towards Caldwell. Stop by the small narrow bridge just after the village and look over the edge. It’s hard to believe it’s the one, but it is. Respect!

In the same vein – has anyone got a copy of that awesome shot of the Black Knight T-33 (just) above the cornfield at Duxford?

    Ignition on, choke out. Start.

    MH

Shows a significant lack of knowledge of VW engines!

    In my experience it is.

Choke out, ignition on. Swing for five minutes.

Choke in, increasing amounts of throttle, ignition on. Swing for another five minutes.

Ignition off, blow out. Swear. Have a cup of tea.

Set throttle, ignition on, aeroplane may then fire first compression scaring the crap out of you, then it’ll stop again!

Repeat above until taking up gliding as an alternative hobby!

More seriously, as I do power checks with the tail tied down and on chocks before taxying, my very basic pre-take off and pre-landing checks are:

    TAKEOFF
T – Throttle friction nut tight
M – Magnetos checked, on both
P – Petrol on and sufficient
    C – Carb heat checked,back to cold
    A – Airframe, harness, OK
R – Runway, approach and windsock
B – Brakes off (as if!)
    I – Instruments set, checked
C – Controls full and free (checked into wind)
    E – Engine,full revs, T&Ps at start of takeoff

    APPROACH
B – Brakes off (as if!)
U – Undercarriage down and welded
(M – Mixture not controllable with VW)
    P – Petrol on, sufficient
C – Carb Heat, hot to 200 feet
    A – Airframe, harness OK
R – Runway, approach and windsock

This is an attempt to stay close to a standard checklist, but in the case of a VW-powered Luton, items like trim, flaps and mixture aren’t an issue.

Obviously with a swish sophisticated beast like a Taylor, you might need to add things like flaps and trim to your checklists.

Another alternative is to start with something like a Cessna checklist and remove the items which aren’t fitted to your aeroplane!

As a low-hours pilot though – would myself appreciate any feedback from others with more experience!!

Great pics, funny to see how the guy gets in his Luton Minor (or whatever the plane is with the high wing and vw engine)

Yes, thanks John. You obviously caught my best side!

Getting into the Luton is a bit of an acquired art, only rivalled by trying to get into the front seat of a Pietenpol Aircamper.

This old cartoon (courtesy of Arthur Mason) shows the other alternative!

I thought it was part of the charm.
The comentator, like most other people working on OW show days is a volunteer.
Worth bearing in mind when being critical.

And anyway.. there are worse, check out the commentator at Oswego NY for Jerry Billing’s Spitfire display! http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=46452
