Just glad to see (1) That the pilot is OK. And pulled off a pretty good forced landing too!
(2) That a unique – and recently beautifully restored aeroplane is relatively lightly damaged – I’m sure it’ll be flying again very soon.
Hmm, just off to double check my prop mounting bolts before I fly tonight!
While the Aerovan wasn’t exactly a success, am I right in thinking Shorts developed the basic design into the Skyvan.
Certainly the configuration, boxy fuselage, high aspect-ratio wing, twin tails – is familiar.
Never saw an Aerovan, but I spent a bit of time sitting in ‘Whistling Wardrobes’!
My notes say that Luton LA-5A Major G-AYVN (PFA 1204) was first flown at Staverton on 24.7.73. It sadly crashed near Barton on 31.5.81 with two fatalities. Witnesses reported that the engine was misfiring ( Continental C90) and that the wings appeared to fall off.
It is great to see posts on these type of aircraft – they also are part of the rich tapestry of historic aviation. More please.
Anyone know where there are any ‘Major’ survivors? It’d be nice to just see one, let alone try and figure whether there’s a design mod that could be implemented?
I understand there used to be one in the museum at Sunderland, is it still intact?
You don’t need to hurt yourself, or even need a whole aeroplane to make a fool of yourself (see attached!)
Totally agree with all the ‘wows’ above.
Great pictures Eric, they really sum up for me what old aeroplanes are about
Steve
Glad you got the disk ok. Hope it was of some use to you.

Gary
Huge use many thanks. It’s amazing there’s so much to learn about a little aeroplane.
Steve
The great thing about even the smallest aeroplane, is that each one takes up such a big part of so many people’s lives – they all have a story to tell!
Watch him Bod – looks like he wants a Squadron – now a squadron of Luton Minors would be very entertaining…..you wouldnt know if they were retreating or advancing…just kinda hanging there…!
Sorry, not such a quick response as you expected. But an interesting idea. A Balbo of Minors? hmmmm
Would make Diamond Nine look like a fast jet team in comparison.
I think we’d only get one flypast in during the course of any airshow slot!
It also presupposes that we could get every VW, JAP and baby Lycoming to start on the same day!
Why would an Avro Baby not be PFA friendly!!? just cause it aint on the list now dont mean it carnt be done!! Would be loverly to see.
Eindecker anyone?
Has your Uncle still got the plans for his Flambards TV replicas Bod?
I normally wear shoes that are so disreputable that my wife won’t let me out of the house if she sees I’ve got them on, but there’s method in my madness.
Anytime I wear decent shoes, I either get oil dribbled on them or scuff them to blazes either preflighting the aeroplane or wiping the fuselage down after a flight. OK, I sometimes fly behind a ‘Dripsy Major’ I admit!
I do like have a decent non-leather sole on my shoes though. Forget controllability in the air. I’m more worried about going ass over apex while swinging a prop on wet grass!
Am reading Boy Soldiers of WW1 by richard van emden, and i recommend it, very good. When i was a boy my father took me to see a local ww1 veteran who went through the somme and paschendaelle, and i regret i didnt really take much notice,i would now though
Sadly, wasn’t that the case for so many of us. In the 1970s as a teenager, I flew a number of times with a pilot who originally trained with the RNAS. How I wish I’d quizzed him a bit more thoroughly!
As ‘Blue Max’ said earlier, one of our hopes when we get the BE-2 replica airworthy, is to integrate it in an entertaining way in displays, to remind us all of the very different lives people led, not to mention the challenges of flying and maintaining the aeroplanes at the time.
If anyone has any information or memories, particularly appertaining to BEs we’d be delighted to hear of them.
Anybody else remember Avro’s Chief Test Pilot ‘Roly’ Falk, rolling the Vulcan at low level at the Farnborough displays of the 1950’s.
Better still has anybody got an image they can show us?
Mark
I seem to remember the rolling Vulcan is on one of DD videos’ Farnborough in the ’50s videos. There’s certainly footage of Vulcans or Victors ‘lob bombing’, effectively an Immelman!
Very impressive.
Notice on the second pic, that you used the old “I’m taking the photos while you do all the pushing and lifting” trick.
Don’t tell Matt, he hasn’t rumbled me yet!!
Be nice cos i’ve just dropped off two wooden T-6 map cases for you as i promised!
Bod was in a Skybolt so i nicked the BE, Am ransoming it for £1 ONO! Hee hee! 😀
BTW ta for the photo CD
All the best
TT
Many thanks for the map cases Ben, wonder if one’ll fit in a Luton Minor cockpit! Hope Matt’s given you some of the BE’s fabric (a roundel?) for the museum wall!
Back to business though, I know a few examples still exist, but a number of people are tackling Comper Swifts, or how about a Chilton DW 1, one of the prettiest around.
You could always double the surviving population of Dart Kittens – or if you want to scare yourself, a number of drawings exist for the Percival Mew Gull, though why you’d want to fly an aeroplane you can’t see out of……
More piccies, thanks Gary
Thanks Albert for the info on http://www.lutonminor.co.uk. I’ve sent some of my pictures to Mike aka Poetpilot. Hopefully he’ll further update the site.

Regarding the Luton Majors – anybody got any idea why they all appear to have been grounded, cancelled (in the UK at least)?
Here’s a couple of my old girl at Sywell mid 80’s
And we think old aeroplanes in sponsors livery are something new!
Matt, do you realise you started a trend that ended up with the Red Bull Sea Vixen!!
