It means you can avoid using that awful Quicktime video player too!
I guess the relatively smaller field sizes and amount of arable grown in the SW didn’t make it as viable as in the E and NE.
I spent a few teenage vacations holding marker poles for I think, Farmair Pawnees (or were they Rush Green aeroplanes?). I also remember some hilarious attempts to get overladen Hillers to fly on hot days!
This picture of Bill Bowker in action in Hertfordshire appeared on the ‘how low’ thread a while ago. It certainly sums up some silly flying before the cheaper tractor rigs took over.
Probably a dumb question but why have a mobile wind sock
Nice pics BTW 🙂
They’ve got to put it in the lee of the trees, otherwise it would be too windy to fly! 😀
Lovely pics Colin. I guess all us forty-somethings are getting all nostalgic now!
A bit puzzled by the reports of the pilot calling the owner and then booking the next flight home, as the owner and normal pilot of BBD, Rob Davies appears to be in that last picture!
That’s what I thought too. Proves you can never trust a journalist, whatever the language!
Mind you I did like the German word for emergency frequency: “SOS-funk kanal” maybe the CAA should adopt that one! 😀
Martii,
I admit it ‘looks’ quite big, but maybe you are just quite small. I can swing a Tiger Moth, and a Ripon can’t be much different.
Yeah, go for it Propstrike! :diablo:
I took a look at the first picture, thought “nice tidy workshop”, then I realised it was the interior!!
Sampled both the beefburgers at the Pilots Mess and the AT-3 at Brooklands School of Flying (thanks Gareth) yesterday.
Both were 100-percent excellent!
Hmmm. Might explain an impressionist paint finish on the BE-2? :diablo:
How about another free beer for identifying the A/C 😀
A hint. It’s not the Luton Minor!
What’s the Pilots Mess like?
The Aviator Hotel always seems a bit of a hit or miss affair for food, will you be able to get food in the new facilities?
From what I’ve heard, that’s the reason why the Pilot’s Mess has been created, to offer decent grub for visiting crews more quickly and conveniently. I’m looking forward to sampling it.
Oh and Moggy. Manston? 😮 Not with a downwind leg like this! 😀
Nice pics all. After reading through all the rows of BS I was wondering whether I’d ever get to find out who had turned up. Looks like plenty did.
Must get over there and sample a Sywell Burger at the Mess!
Couldn’t make it myself. Was at a club fly-out a little further away. First person to identify the airfield gets a free beer in The Aviator bar!! 🙂
So will it be at Legends? :diablo:
Love those Tigers too. We must do something about the ‘hi viz’ yellow on ‘FM’s fuel tank though!!
I think I can hear its Merlin engine roar from my seat!
Last night’s curry perhaps? 😀
