I guess the IAF’s conundrum is that it wants to support indigenous programs, but at the same time, has to stay aware of what capabilities it needs to maintain superiority in the neighbourhood.

If the Tejas is to be the backbone of the IAF alongwith the MRCA and the Su-30MKI, then it needs to be a very capable fighter, considering that IAF’s threats are a lot greater than most other Asian and European Air Forces. no offence meant, but India has had 4 major wars in its history with Pakistan alone, the most recent one being in 1999, where air support was crucial and has a belligerant China making claims on its territory all the time, as well as occupying territory.
that thinking is what probably makes IAF feel that it can’t accept anything less than a fully multirole 4th gen fighter, although it would make sense to induct it faster with less capabilities.

but then, apart from that, testing has’nt been very quick, due to the sheer learning curve that Indian engineers have to master, and in part due to the fear that if a single LCA crashes, the entire program could be held ransom.

Wing Cmdr Rajiv Kothiyal had recieved the prestigious Ivan C. Kincheloe award for test pilots when he had presented a paper on the test flight program for the Tejas, and had surprised the world test pilots community on how complex it was- they just did’nt expect that India would be taking up such a challenging task with no prior experience.

    link

A LCA test pilot was picked up for this award at a time when leading air forces of the world are propelling ahead with combat programmes such as the Joint Stirke Fighter ( JSF ),F-22 Raptor , F-28E Super Hornet of HTE US ,the Europe and the SU -37 Berkut programme of Russia.

IAF sources said Kothiyal along with Wing Commander Banerjee presented a paper on the first flight of LCA at the SETP annual symposium held at Los Angeles, USA,prior to the announcement oof the awards.

“The presentation was well received by the world community because the LCA was a programme after the Marut ( HF-24 ) flew in 1961,” sources said.

those who understand the difficulty in flight testing a 4th gen all digital FBW equipped fighter do appreciate how difficult the task is.

so its likely that even if the IAF had said ok to a pure air to air role Tejas, it would’nt necessarily have entered service much faster.

HuntingHawk, those pics were from the flash file that was on ADA’s website. I uploaded them so that those who could’nt download the pics could see it..looking at the people in the pics, Nagpur appears to be close to 40 deg C and around noon, its the worst..I can attest to it because I’m from Baroda and in summer, the dry heat really felt severe, almost always above 40 deg C.

By the way, loved the Tejas test pilot’s patch on Gp Cpt Nayini Harish. shows a Tejas with IFR probe, so its definitely planned in the somewhat near future..;)

India did hit a technical bottle neck, which India is unable to overcome for several years. You can buy the critical elements, but not the related know how to be independent from that foreign input in a critical item, like the engine.

why not? China managed to overcome some of the bottlenecks it faced due to technological backwardness by getting Russian engineers to work on its programs and got Israeli help as well, did’nt it?

Vikas, I’d suspect that the Derby would be the first BVR weapon on the Tejas. it would’nt be that straightforward for Elta to integrate the R-77 with the E-2032 radar even if Russia cooperated, as compared to simply using the Derby. as weaponisation progresses, the R-77 could be integrated as well, and hopefully by then the MMR will be in place of the E-2032.

We’ve not posted for a while here.

We have no good news. Rumors of decreasing the total number of Rafale are stronger now, as the publication of the “Livre Blanc” is closing.
The 294 target number may be lowered by something like 50 Rafale… 🙁

In Afghanistan, Rafale also use the Scarabée link, which allow ground operators to provide Rafale pilots with kill boxes, directly.

I just hope that makes Dassault desperate enough to sell the Rafale at very competitive prices to India..it really is the ideal fit for the IAF’s MRCA competition, but the only thing that may stand in the way could be high cost..

will the Rafale F3 have AESA ? if yes, which one? I tried asking some Dassault reps, and no answer was forthcoming.

No, the plane couldn’t stop before the end of the runaway, and with a central tank + 4 missiles, the pilot choose the ejection “in case of” …

but was the airplane written off or salvaged?

the small snippet says that the Jaisalmer leg will begin in the second half of the year, so it could be sometime in August-September. more crucially, it appears that there are a lot of parameters (2100 as per the report) that have yet to be validated before FOC. so, even as the work progresses satisfactorily, there is a lot more to be done.

this is great learning experience for a very young aerospace industry. will hopefully be followed on by another program that does’nt let the experience go waste.

India to acquire 22 attack helis

India looking to acquire attack helis..In this regard, the news that the US may be looking to sell second-hand refurbished Apaches to S Korea is interesting. maybe India may look at these, if they were offered substantially cheaper than new-build Apaches.

India to acquire 22 attack helicopters
    Thu, May 29 08:05 PM

Sumir Kaul Berlin, May 29 (PTI)

In a bid to strengthen the offensive prowess of its armed forces, Indian government has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) to acquire 22 attack helicopters. The RFP document, which includes offset clauses, was issued last week to major global helicopter manufacturers who were given three months time to respond, sources said here.

Confirming this, a senior Eurocopter official said “we have received the RFP and are looking into it. We have to reply by August.

” “We will be participating in the bid process and will offer our Tiger helicopter. We are studying the RFP document and preparing our plan of action,” Bruno Boulnois, General Manager of Eurocopter (India) told PTI.

Besides Eurocopter which is part of the defence and aviation consortium EADS, the other major contenders for this competition are Boeing’s AH-54D, Augusta Westland’s AW-129 Mangustu and Russia’s MI-28N NightHunters. PTI.
