Probably because this thread is well over a year old.

Thanks for pointing that out in such a way

    It was very helpful

    I have removed the post

    Dresden

I have no wish to enter this debate for or against

There are many far better able and qualified to do that than I can

However I think if anybody is interested in a seemingly balanced account of the “whys and wherefores”, they can perhaps do no better than read the approriate passage in Air Commodore Henry Probert’s definitive 2001 biography of Harris.

    Hampden Resto

Anybody know if RAFM is persisting with the half and half restoration on the Hampden??

The reason was “before and after” I think but to me it always seemed to be about cash – simplistically half the restoration = half the cost although I’m sure it’s probably not a linear equation.

If they want to show “before” point them in the direction of the Halifax and put a complete Hampden on show. Then all we need is the Whitley, a Stirling and a Manchester to name but a few-

ps is it true that the Argosy was the last use of the centre section designed for the Manchester……………….

pps-the Harrier is an altogether more rarer beast – a Kestrel – the stepping stone between P1127 and Harrier GR1 – which has donated it’s wings to the P1127 at Brooklands according to W&R

I suspect it may be a while before we see the two of them on the ramp together at Old Warden….or should that particular scene be staged at Mildenhall.

    enjoy

    Oops

I suppose I should have realised I was dyslexic when I went to a toga party dressed as a goat………….

It’s just that I’ve been trying to find out the background to that Bergerac me110 for about 20 years!

    Messerschmitt “replica”

Was this the same curious replica as they used in an early episode of Bergerac (first series) called something like “Very Late for a Funeral”

Does anybody know if this replica actually had any aeronautical background once upon a time, or was it purely a fabrication by the props department

There has been a big review ongoing in WHS shops to look at the magazines stocked. The bottom line is that although you may have been getting a particular magazine at WHS for any number of years there is no certainty that it will be stocked in the future.

I have been in intersting correspondence with the ever so helpful customer relations people at WHS. About as much use as a chocolate teapot!

They apparently have a shop save scheme which should allow you to reserve/order individual magazines (at a price – anything up to 3 months deposit required at the whim of individual shop managers)

I ended up down the subscription/order from the little local newsagent route

A classic example of corporate profit over customer satisfaction!

Another possible option – I’m pretty sure I’ve seen pictures of a Hurricane in Greece c 1941 in a similar sort of strictly unofficial scheme. It reeks of an extemporised scheme done in a hurry. Were Spitfires used in this theatre this early?

    I wonder whether….

it’s an early PR scheme devised by Sidney Cotton –

I may be way off beam though

perhaps Mark 12 can help, now that he’s finished diving for the ditched Dambuster Lanc at Derwent – 🙂

you’re not the only one, Cees

Many former early Wixers seem to have migrated over here recently, although a number of us seem to have adopted an alter ego (or egos)! 😉

Perhaps we emigrees all ought to use our proper names :dev2:

some-one got part of the way there first!

This is the one I always use (and it includes Air International) although I’m not sure how regularly updated it is and it only covers WW2 aircraft-

it always seems to provide me with the information I need as there are too many to run through now! Doesn’t need to be bang up to date as my failing memory can usually remember the last few issues

    hope this helps

    Derwent Lanc

I’ll talk to Vic when I next see him about this ditched Lanc story

Funny how I lived there and never heard it before………….

Certainly over the years I’ve seen the dam so low that surely something would have been visible.

The Herc references remind me of the time I was drinking at the Ladybower (which was often as it was my local) and we rushed out at the sound of unaturally loud highly revving engines. A Herc was heading straight (or so it seemed) for the pub. Always assumed he had been flying up the dam and mistakenly turned right instead of left at the convergence. Goodness only knows how he cleared the hill……… 😮

There is just about a third York survivor in Canada – See the piccys on the (dare I say it) WIX gallery
