Two good days for me as well, combining meeting lots of friends from the military vehicle world with excellent displays from aircraft of the same era, taking off from the next door field – so near that you could feel the hollow thump in the ground as aircraft landed. Once again the C47 short field operations amazed and there was a goodly selection of USAAF, RAF and Luftwaffe aircraft, some posed between flights with re-enactors and the appropriate authentic hardware such as bowsers, tractors and runway control caravans. Harvards seemed very plentiful, especially on Sunday, which was very nice to see.

That the C47 dropped sticks of parachutists (jumping with authentic round canopies) was an added bonus. Ignore the modern fly-ins on the far side of the strip and the whole place had the feel of a temporary strip during the Battle of France or a Normandy Advanced Landing Ground.

Standing on the drivers footstep, leaning on the cab roof of a Wartime Bedford 15cwt definitely ranks as one of my most evocative airshow experiences.

my thanks to all the pilots who contributed to what everybody I have spoken to regarded as a fantastic weekend.

As a matter of interest, when and where was the last time that anybody paid to participate in a discussion forum? I can’t think of any where you have to pay to participate

I referred them to the definitive Aviation of Japan article on MXY-7 colours some time ago so there is no excuse to get it wrong!

It is actually a “make and take” from the new Plane Factory gallery at the Brooklands Museum. Children (and I suspect a good few adults – like myself) take prestamped aluminium blanks, and then under close supervision and health and safetydom, fold, roll and rivet the parts themselves into the plane shown. It seems up to 400 of these are being churned out per day. I think it’s a wonderful idea and is very hands on – which seems to be one of the primary offers for museums nowadays.

The Plane Factory and attached Flight Shed are well worth a visit. The Plane Factory particularly is a very good way of presenting the Museum’s aircraft and supporting displays. As ever, the challenge will be to keep the interactive stuff interactive.

Invest in the latest edition of Wrecks and Relics and take it from there, literally and metaphorically.

You sit in the drivers seat, disengage the clutch, start the engine, put it into gear, engage the clutch, press the accelerator and use the steering wheel…

They’re going to have to put a Renault kill marking on the cockpit side……

Looking for a straight in line, not right angled, Pye connector, as used in Gee and WS19 sets, to complete an installation.

    Thanks

Discussed on the Jeremy Vine programme today-make of that what you will. One caller, ex RAF ground crew, mentioned the involvement of an RAF Hunter ex Chivenor, which returned to base with the ammo bays empty. Apparently the pilot and gun camera footage were quickly removed from the scene….

Could just be line-talk of course.

Wherever you decide to go, get there very early as there will be road closures and one way routes put in place. The signs are up already

Be warned. People were just parking up and literally abandoning their cars in the middle of the road (can you believe it?) down by the Ladybower Dam wall when the two Lancs flew over

Surely comparisons can be drawn with the Bf109E retrieved from India (and then squirrelled away) in recent years. That was a gift to an Indian benefactor, and didn’t the Fellowship of the Bellows, which I think was Argentinian based, fund a number of Whirlwinds so by the same accord, a Stuka and / or other EA could easily have been sent to Argentina as a gift.

I recall people questioned the rumours of a 109 mouldering away in India but it was proved to be correct. I wouldn’t be too hasty in discounting this particular rumour either.

We didn’t send them a Whirlwind as well when they were withdrawn did we?
