that second photo is interesting

Looks like a Leyland Comet in the background, but the one in front looks like a pre-war W Type Bedford with a tank added – The tank almost looks as if it originated on one of those Brockhouse trailers often seen during the war. Was this picture in-service or was the tanker a “bitza” made to be blown up in a film?

This hypothetical project has been discussed since the good old days of the Warbirds Worldwide forum. One point though-as the Supermarine Type 538, the Pakistan Air Force Attackers were land based so did they actually retain the folding outer wings. If not, surely the hypothetically surviving wings could be used in the recreation of a Spiteful rather than a Seafang.

My understanding has always been that the Spiteful fuselage was essentially late series Spitfire with a raised cockpit area. (That might have come from an early Air Enthusiast article) Is that an oversimplification

on the subject of AH-1 cobras, nobody seems to have mentioned the accident that befell the Red Bull Cobra last week

You do not need to be either a pilot or an expert to recognise and admire the skill of the pilot in pulling off that text-book forced landing which must have minimised the inevitable damage to the airframe, even if they are probably built like a brick %hit-house to reflect the vicissitudes of carrier life. It is to be hoped that the airmanship shown is reflected in an appropriate manner at an appropriate time

Is the Spitfire being refinished as TE199 – the personal hack of the AOC of 21 Group based at Swinderby in the late 1940s – in which case it might sprout gold wing tips and spinner and (call the roundel police) gold outlines to the C type roundels………

Final stage I know, but often the thing that lets a restoration down Here is a useful, erudite discusion of the MXY-7 colours by an acknowledged expert on Japanese aircraft paint and colours

It’s a very long term project but it’s in safe hands and will one day be a lasting tribute to Bomber Command and hopefully mirror the excellent USAAF Control tower projects in Norfolk. Partly to blame for the slow progress is the diversion of funds towards creating the airfield MT Section.

that last shot just highlights the sheer difficulty of clambering over the wing spar in the fuselage to get to the front or back of the airframe – particulaly in full flying kit

There is a certain irony in it being towed out of the hangar by a BMW…..

A lovely restoration – but is the pilots seat still being used as a dentist’s chair?

Presumably those who need to know an airframe’s provenance will know it or will find it out and for the rest of us it doesn’t really matter. It’s not as if we can’t make up our own mind from the information readily available to us

The one at Hendon comprises the second Strathallan fuselage mated to recovered tail and wing remains from Iceland which were restored at St Athan. The CC example presumably was the better of the two Strathallan examples. I think both originated from Canada.

Following the dispersal of the CC collection, the Battle (still in static condition) was displayed at Duxford before being sold to Belgium. IIRC a swap for a gate guardian Belgian Spitfire was somehow involved. Has it deteriorated though-or has the restoration just not been progressed further

God knows who thought it was a good idea to put a military vehicle museum in such a damp place – I find it incredible that the unique LRDG Chevy now in the IWM was initially displayed there.

One visit was enough – stuff seemed to rust before your eyes.

and scroll down for the famouus Charles E Brown photo of the Lancaster on test from Castle Bromwich showing the extent of fabricked joins.

From the outset this was always going to be a meticulous static restoration inside and out

Which makes the RAFM’s stated reason for not pursuing the acquisition further all the more curious
