not only planes
The guages on WWII vehicles were also luminous. You can see that a radioactive warning sticker has been attached to the speedometer in the jeeps in the Land Warfare hall at Duxford
Miles away – nowhere near; he is not referring just to aircraft in the FHC collection.
Bruce
M36B2 Jacksons /M18 Hellcats perchance to name but two
There was a lot of MDAP material thrown at Yugoslavia in the 50s when it took a stand against Russia – much of that subsequently appeared in the wars that followed its break-up
The powers that be were probably only too happy for it to be moved on to collectors in the west – it took it out of the equation
There were probably still caches of German armour as well – look at the recent slew of dug in PIVs and JPIVs recovered from the Bulgarian border…………
Is this connected the the fact that the RAFM Wellington is going to have a substantial refurb at the MBCC?
Given the significant operational record of the Wellington, I do hope they don’t go all original on us and refurb it as a T10 in silver dope with yellow trainer bands.
If they want an example of the secondary use of a combat aircraft they already have the Tempest TT Mk V
Operation Mincemeat
I’ve just finished reading Operation Mincemeat by Ben MacIntyre – the full story of “The Man Who Never Was”
If you subscribe to ATB you will know much of the UK side already although it also covers the background to all the intelligence to-ing and fro-ing in Spain associated with the passing of the false information through to Germany.
Well worth a read – as it has topped the UK best sellers charts one assumes it wont be too long before it appears in paperback.
What is the significance of this on a historic aviation forum?
Am I missing something here?
I’ve been to museums large and small all over the country but I will never go there on principle. Must be the only museum in the country (or at least one of a very small number) where they demand (not just request) that you hand in your phone and/or camera as a condition of entry.
Undoubtedly some will say it’s my loss, not theirs, and perhaps it is but in a world where reputation counts for everything, attractions compete for ever decreasing disposable incomes and an ageing volunteer base, the loss will ultimately be theirs.
dhfan – Exactly my thoughts, and I was part of the group that started talking about the possibility of the project all those years ago on the late lamented Warbirds Worldwide forum.
I’m actually sorry it’s going there – had hoped it might end up in Hendon or Cosford
As a reader (and hoarder of back issues) since Issue 1, I didn’t renew my subscription when it ran out a few months ago.
Says it all really….
… but I dont suppose anybody at Key is bothered. I’m not their target audience any more. How did something which was so good get so bad? Is it the Key’s use of “generic” editorial staff rather than people who actually have an interest in the subject and know what they’re talking about. It is not just the aviation titles where this race to the bottom has happened.
I’m shocked….. Key actually seem to have finally listened to their consumers and have reinstated the news pages section within the magazine,
Atco – not entirely crazy — the ErnLake jack in my Bedford MWR was made by the people who made Suffolk Punch lawnmowers and I have found other parts made by Qualcast during its restoration
Or you could look out for Classic Military Vehicle next month
It is an ex-Forum; it is no more
I swore I wouldn’t post here again, but this made me break my self imposed embargo

Incredible, and definitely not rebuilt as an airliner
I’m not a member of the “me,me,me” generation so…..
Wasn’t so much a “flounce” as a final attempt to try and make Key sit up and take notice of the actual effect of their ill starred “update”.
Could have just walked away quietly once and for all after 16 years without all the un-necessary accusations of flouncing etc from other forum members, but would Key have noticed. I doubt it. They seem not to have noticed previously when other members just melted away
This way the long term effects of the “update” are at least again raised to the top of the page and it has to be said, again underlines the weight that Key attaches/attached to long standing members of the forum, many of whom supported Key in the earliest days with subscriptions when FlyPast was their only publication.
Indeed, on its last legs with only a very faint pulse, but an interesting read nonetheless.
A sad reminder of the golden days of this forum, but arguably that Burma debate was the beginning of a long lingering end had we known it
