It’s wonderful to see some new tail feathers on the Hampden.
Are these new build, or restored originals. I only ask as I don’t recall seeing them during my visit in 2013.I wonder what timescale it will be completed in, and are there any major missing parts still?
Speaking with the technician working on it, it seems that the tail is a combination of original from Russia, spare tail section obtained from Canada and new build. – the mangled fillet sections between the horizontal and vertical tail sections were the next challenge……….
So potentially a Spitfire from a national collection has been handed over to a third party with no guarantee (but presumably an expectation – and no more) that the P40 will be delivered to the RAFM for display.
With all due respect. That is NOT Papua New Guinea(PNG), that is on the island of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
yes – I know that – I amended my initial title in the expectation that it would change the thread title – but it was not to be – perhaps the mods could oblige.
Seems to me that the library is an integral and crucial part of the IWM’s offer (sorry for the buzzword but I can’t think of another suitable term quickly). It represents an important resource for people looking for specific items or covering paricular areas of interest.
Having said that – I recently sought to obtain a copy of a particular doument in the library – a parts list for a military vehicle. However part of it was A3 size which they refused to copy for fear of damage. Couldn’t really understand that – people will open it up to look at it anyway – and if they did copy it all they needed to do was to do two copies and use the second copy to copy from in the future (sorry there’s a lot of copies in that sentence – but you get my drift.)
As it was, that double page diagram was fundamental to the use/value of the document to me – so I didn’t bother.
I don’t think a forum witch hunt helps anyone, particularly someone who volunteers their time. I’d like to leaves it there please. Howard has responded to the OP and to the forum in general. I can’t see that he can do any more.
Bruce
I have had an apology from the gentleman concerned and I have thanked him for that (via Howard)
As the OP, as far as I am concerned there is nothing more that needs to be said – either by me or anybody else.
I think it’s time to put this thread to bed now, as everyone including Bruce has said out the thousands that go to the museum there is one or maybe two in a bad year that have a problem. In future send the museum a private Email do not start a thread on a public forum.
Thanks for your advice – but I don’t need you or anyone else to tell me what to do
Oh dear, just looked at trip advisor and the museum didn’t get a good write up for yesterday (1st Nov). All the other write ups throughout the year seem ok.
Just to be clear – never posted on Trip Advisor in my life – and don’t intend to start now.
As an aside has anybody else noted how hoteliers and B&B owners now seem to push you to put good write ups on Trip Advisor though?
I make no apology for posting – simply because it was the complete antithesis of anything I have ever experienced at the museum in the hundreds of times I have visited. I was actually genuinely shocked – which is why I didn’t argue the toss
If I had been passing at 1 minute past 4.00pm, I would have continued my journey without stopping because I wouldn’t expect to push the established boundaries – but as it was, it was within the published opening hours. There is the usual “no entries within an hour of closing” sign – which is borderline acceptable as some people may only visit to see a specific item or have a cuppa at the cafe – which would exclude them. Generally shops – which was my destination on this occasion – usually stay open to allow stragglers to leave the site – so I didn’t expect to be turned away.
Fine bringing forward the closing time – but then you would potentially still have the same issue – just a bit earlier.
I’ve seen far worse comments on Trip Advisor by the way…………
I sense some bans may be looming!
Some people have a warped sense of sense of humour
The problem is that everyone thinks they’re sew sew funny
Is it better to have a museum specialist who can learn/be advised on aviation
or
Is it better to have an aviation specialist who can learn/be advised on museums
I suppose it depends if the new incimbent has to hit the ground running – in which case probably better to appoint a museum specialist who can be advised on the specialised subject – particularly with WW1 /RAF foundation anniversaries current and on the horizon
sooner or later it will be in the public domain anyway.
Probably in OK or Hello.
You can’t get away from today’s shallow, celebrity-obsessed, world anywhere nowadays – not even here.
Nobody seems get their knickers in a twist about who owns what airframe generally – perhaps with the noteable exception of Tom Cruise and his Mustang – but that says it all really doesn’t it
It seems according to the link listed above that two men are still missing from this aircraft – having not exited the aircraft after the ditching. I fail to see why people are even discussing the recovery when the wreck must potentially be regarded as a war grave in any case.
I see there’s even an example of that rare beastie the Fleet Air Arm Dalek…………..
Seems a shame that airframes like the Albacore and Firefly (IV or V??) are in store (snap)
