never been a fan of the Millstones of Flight concept – The RAF Today seems a good use for the building – plastic Typhoon/plastic JSF/Prototype Merlin and a spare Tornado just about cover the RAFs current combat capability. Would be sensible to base the capital’s RAF recruiting team there as well
Still think they need to cover the human aspects of the RAF better – the bits and pieces and ephemora – sadly lacking since the galleries were closed
John Romain seemed impressed.

As it’s his company, I’d be rather surprised if he wasn’t………….;)
IMHO the proposed acquisition list that he shared with the delegates at the AHL Autumn Conference in 2011 didn’t include many ‘pet projects’ – but sadly some items on the list seem to have escaped.
Just as a matter of interest/record, what was on the proposed acquisition list – it seems to be clearly in the public arena………………….
I first saw him in the narrow boat series – and even then my first thought was that he was being groomed as a characterful “North of Watford Gapper” to appear on Industrial Archaeology programmes and the like as a replacement for the dearly departed Fred Dibnah. Mind you those unlikely upstarts The Hairy Bikers have also been thrown into that same melting pot.
It was an enjoyable programme – although I found it strange that throughout the programme I can remember no reference to “Supermarine” or “Vickers-Supermarine” and it was made to appear initially as a private venture by R J Mitchell
They also eventually bought out Taskers of Andover who built Queen Mary trailers. Ultimately bought out by Montracon and are no more.
There’s some background here

The RFC trailer has been reproduced from photographs as none survived
For those who missed this, it is being repeated on Wednesday 8th October on BBC2 commencing at 7.00pm
Key already owned the military vehicle monthly Military Machines International before acquiring the other military vehicles monthly Classic Military Vehicles from the Kelsey stable. MMI and CMV are being amalgamated under the CMV title from the December issue with the MMI editor apparently being made redundant. I wonder if this is a pointer to what will happen with FP and Aeroplane
There’s a signpost article to this programme in today’s Sunday Times
aircraft are designed to fly, not sit on the ground.
Yes but flight usually includes copious amounts of noise, forward (sometimes sideways or backwards as well) movement and a total absence of wires unless you’re an early helicopter or VTOL aircraft. Furthermore, unless you’re Hanna Reitsch flying an early Focke-Angelis design, it usually takes place outside rather than in a building. I suspect most aircraft spend much more time on the ground than in the air so I would contend that displayed on the ground on it’s undercarriage is a far more natural state than hanging from the ceiling by wires…………….
I seem to rememmer James Knightly (JDK) mentioning the Westland Doncaster factory many moons ago – might even have been on the WW forum. -he wrote a book on the Lysander so presumably uncovered information in his researches.
I havent been there specifically because of their ban on photography – not that I take many photos anyway; it’s just the principle – but if I did and they asked me (however politely) to hand over my phone, I’d point two fingers, ask for my money back and walk out.
There’s an issue of trust here – by asking me to hand over my phone, they clearly don’t trust me to comply with their rules even though I probably had every intention of respecting their wishes/demands in the first place. Everybody is therefore is regarded as a somebody not worthy of trust by the management
Did someone actually say that the paranoia extends to following people around to make sure…………..
Don’t forget what happened to Air Enthusiast………………………….
Thanks for the memories, guys and God speed
