Perhaps, finally, someone will be able to confirm what colour Spitfire cockpits were painted………
As the Baffin is a development of the Ripon, with some new builds and some converted from Ripons, I guess that it would be possible to use the surviving Finnish Ripon as a pattern aircraft for much of the airframe behind the firewall.
Welcome back – it would have been a lesser place without you
and thanks to the mods for holding the ring
Whitley,
Are you ready to put together your spitfire then?Jay
I’d far rather Elliott put his Whitley together first – there are (soon to be) hundreds of Spitfire’s being put together but very few Whitleys 😀
just a shame that the architects didn’t think about people to the extent that when the building was first opened it was possible to brain yourself on some of the rusty steel framing as you walked in through the main entrance. They’ve added black and white safety barriers now to satisfy elf & safety……
Another of these “I know more than you do ” threads which serves only to inflate the overblown ego of the original poster
That would be nice.
Do you have a URL?
Moggy
Google is definitely your friend on this occasion………
I’m really surprised nobody has mentioned the World of Tanks girls yet.
Oh damn I have………………
Am I alone in thinking that it would be nice to get all the WW1 and before a/c (including the Snipe) centralised in the G-W area and quietly loose the “Milestones of Flight” theme instead using the hall as part of the general display area – perhaps for inter-war aircraft.
Nice to see that thought is again being given to “small exhibits” such as uniforms – bring back the gallery areas in the historic hangars!
It looks much the same to me ? not really easy to tell. I’m about to spray my RAF Humber 4×4 and was going to use RAF Dark Earth and Green camo, so interested in this subject.

Vehicle colours and RAF aircraft colours are different
Have you got a copy of Mike Starmer’s book on home/NW Europe vehicle colours – essential reading plus he gives you colour chips. The other source is Dick Taylor’s 4 volume Warpaint series from MMP
Frank Burberry’s paints seem well matched – I’m doing a 10cwt GS trailer in his SCC2 at the moment
Interesting comparison photo of the Spitfire with the Albion refueller – showing how different the SCC2 colour of the refueller was from the standard RAF Dark Earth colour on the Spitfire
I agree. In fact, I think that it’s dangeous to dali here for too long unless you’ve got magritte than me. Or, at least, that what my dada said – and he was in real ernst, man. Ray said that this miro society nowadays!
the whole thread is a load of pollocks :diablo:
Wasn’t the Wolverine’s “sister ship” USS Sable a side wheeler?
For me, the worth of adequate and informed storage is summed up by the Hampden – a nose and other remains at East Kirkby (from Sweden) and the original nose glazing on the Canadian reproduction were both de-accessioned by the RAFM at a time before the museum’s own example had been found, recovered and swapped for a Spitfire. All of this material would have immeasurably eased the task of restoring a single complete example for museum display in the UK
Don’t forget political expediency either – B-29D became the B-50 so that it could be perceived as a new model during a time of wholesale cuts with the conclusion of the war, rather than being a revision of an existing design
Many years ago when working at Gamston we often used to get a DH ?Moth fly through – not sure which type or reg. It was owned/flown by a elderly lady Doctor from the former Doncaster airport.
As I remember she never used R/T & quite merrily used to trundle through the air at was seemingly close to a stall.
I know someone out there can probably identify both aircraft & pilot, but what became of the aircraft & does anyone have photo’s.
If you can enlighten me please do.
Many thanks Rad:)

Well remember seeing her taking off one day as I drove in from the M18 to work on Ten Pound Walk
