Possibly they were referring to the grass light aircraft field which is 6nm SW of Derby. Known, I think, as Derby-Egginton.

which is of course the home of DH88 Black Magic (G-ACSP) and the Comet Racer Project. Attend one of their open days, if you get the chance, to see progress.

If anyone asks me for a cordless drill I just point them in the direction of an old *eggbeater* manual drill 🙂

or to be told to ring a number and ask for “Mr Dearden” only to find that it was the local undertakers

The programme about Mannock’s death was shown again this weekend. Is there any more hope that he might eventually lie in a named grave? I know many millions don’t and will never have the chance to be identified, but if it is possible………..

I think it’s more likely to be ex NFS. RAF domestic sites used Austin K2 ATVs with ladders IIRC

I also think GXNxxx was one of the wartime Registration Number blocks used by the Home Office to register vehicles for the NFS and Civil Defence

(Edit) Here’s a picture of a similar appliance GXN219 -from the same batch as GXN215 – the red one on e-bay

We decided that as the majority of archive pictures were in B/W we would do the aircraft in a monochrome scheme as well. This nicely side-steps further debate on colour authenticity and perceived shades and recollections of how they were…:p

Here’s some pictures of the new scheme, as you can see, like Bograt I have photo-shopped the rest of the airfield to give it a “period feel”…:D

    that’s the wrong grey…………….

I think there was something on Look North at 10.30 tonight about the Nimrod going to Elvington. i find it absolutely incredible though that there will be no RAFM Nimrod – is that really the case. They can spend on a new landmark building at Hendon – 300 foot high with a spiral staircase up the middle – but they can’t take on a Nimrod…………..

To amplify the A/V site’s review of WW2 activity: C-47 work was within MAP’s Civilian Repair Organisation by the type’s UK Sister Firm, Airspeed, who had taken a pre-War sub-licence from Fokker, Douglas’ European licencee. Overflow from their Portsmouth capacity. Other CRO overflow work was by Westland on Sea/Spitfires, and by Brooklands Avn. on Wellingtons. Phillips & Powis Aircraft Ltd. assembled 10 Master II there.

Didn’t Westlands build some Lysanders in Doncaster as well

You also forget there was a Ford factory in Doncaster (?) down on Carr Hill Road where Bridon are – were these premises used for aircraft production/repair

I also remember driving out to the M18 on the A6182 and watching the Hornet Moth climbing out parallel to me – happy days – wasn’t it owned by a Doctor in Doncaster?

OK I’m not Mark 12 ( I am not worthy etc etc) but could it be Spitfire F21 LA226 displayed at the Vickers HQ at Millbank in 1976/7 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Spitfire

    Blenheim Nose

Is that solid panel in the nose of the Blenheim metal – or is it just a piece of perspex waiting for the protective paper to be peeled off?

I’d always assumed every panel was glazed – but is this not the case?
