I bought a pic of a Halifax airlifting a jeep, many years ago, through mail order. I’m not at home, but give me a few days and I’ll see about scanning it.
thanks – I miust be the owner of virtually every Jeep book ever produced and I think I know the series from which your picture possibly came. One of the carrying/parachute trays for the jeeps has survived in France. They were secured by attachments which seem to lock into the driver/passenger cutouts in the sides.
The IWM picture seemed to show a lightweight box-type structure which enveloped the Spitfire fuselage which was suspendedfrom the bomb-bay.
Remember writing about a static recovered from a lake in the Arctic circle in 1992! Can’t be that long ago.

In the late and lamented WW?
I think at least one of the Migs is flying with the correct engine
Did anybody see the piece of furniture made from the front end of a Gnat?
Did anybody see the piece of furniture made from the front end of a Gnat?
Well you could start here…

Begs the question
What’s happening (or not) with the East Fortune one?
perhaps these guys can help you
http://www.russiantruck.co.uk/for-sale.php
they obviously have the contacts for Eastern Bloc surplus
How about the Walrus?
hasn’t that been sold to the States?
Edit – incidentally, the aircraft shown in the photo is quite a famous Gladiator, L7619. It’s illustrated in the Osprey book on Gladiator Aces, but I have’t got that to see the profiles in there
The text/plate descriptions in the Gladiator Aces book from Osprey suggests that it is in a temporary “desert camouflage scheme”
I guess it could be possible that the light earth from the shadow compensating scheme was just used as a top half colour as well – that would save repainting the bottom half. But in the desert who knows – somebody could have just as easily mixed some insignia yellow with the light earth to get a sandy colour equivalent to mid stone…………
The Pup certainly isn’t a replica, it shot down two German aircraft during the First World War.
Its originality was certainly dicussed when it was first passed to the RAF Museum by Doug Arnold in exchange for a Spitfire. It seems only to have been accepted as “an original” some time after its completion – previously it had been described as a replica. The CAA only changed this after reciept of a letter from Tommy Sopwith. Interestingly the RAFM itself decribes it as ” The completed aircraft is supposedly 60-70% original, or at least contemporary, components”
Replicas are:
Sopwith Pup
Vichers Vimy
Vickers FB5 Gunbus
Bristol M1C
Sopwith Tabloid
Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter.
BE2
The Bristol Fighter is a partial replica based around one of the Weston on the Green frames.
The rest are originals. Mostly ex RAeS Nash Collection, purchased subsequently by the RAFM.
The Hanriot HD1 is ex Richard Shuttleworth. I think it’s a shame the RAFM didn’t loan it to Old Warden when the LVG was returned. Seems the right place for it.
Some good news to brighten up an awful winter’s day

Is the G-W hangar still only open for half the day?
Presumably the watch tower will be the same. Such a shame
I also notice in the PR speak from the RAFM that they have uploaded a series of You Tube films about aircraft in the G-W hangar. Presumably if you are at Hendon at the wrong time, this sadly may be the only way to see those aircraft.
Are there any more landmark buildings on the way???
What about the long discussed rumour about the dumping of G-AGOI (and other twin engined single seater Westland types) on the Westland Aerodrome at Yeovil following some fire training. The Pergrines were used for other purposes around the factory IIRC
Has anybody actually followed it up – or is it another of those aeroplane urban myths – like the Bristol Bombay in east Africa?
does it have a “c” wing or an “e” wing??
can anybody point me in the direction of a picture of a late IXc with clipped wings and the broad chord rudder – did such a beast even exist??
thanks
Any pics of the Hampden restoration, or is that part closed off to the public?
Cees
Cees – the Hampden was dead centre in the hangar on view for everybody to see, along with the Dolphin, LVG, Battle, Prentice and a big boat.
It was difficult to see progress from the previous open day – although presumably progress there must have been. It was very illuminating speaking to people about the half and half restoration though………….
The Battle was also still underway. i can’t imagine that it has taken nearly a year to repair the damage caused by the careless transport. So what else are they doing to it………
Brian, better get your “DX-Fix” while you can….
Do you know something we dont?
