We only complain about Hendon because we care about it !

OK… so now we’ve debated, and clearly something needs doing – what ARE we going to do?… leave it as just complaining here, or take any further action?

    I’m open to suggestions

How about a sustained programme of sending letters to each of the Trustees expressing concerns about the state of the Museum. One letter may not make a difference – a large number will at least encourage debate amongst the Trustees – either privately or at a formal meeting.

Incidentally I see in an annual report that the Museum classified the acquisition of a part restored Whitley turret as a “major acquisition” – where’s the ambition there – they should be saying something like “work with the Whitley Project to reproduce a complete Whitley airframe using a combination of restored original parts and new build as required, providing an opportunity for the retention and passing on of appropriate skills”

    RAFM Decline

I too have been visiting since the earliest days – but it’s just too depressing to visit nowadays. Sad indeed but things won’t change till there’s changes in management.

It is becomng a national disgrace.

Can you imagine not being able to see parts of the NASM on the Mall or out at Dulles because of what time of the day it is?

Bruce, with all the spotlights firmly and fairly on TA122 at the moment, how’s the refurbishment of the prototype W4050 coming along?

sold a number of years ago to the Paul Allen outfit

    reputedly stored in Norfolk

another bit of the nation’s heritage to leave the shores

    thinks………..

    RAFM TIII to Norway
IWM TIII to USA (via TFC/Norfolk)
Strathallan B35 to Florida/Oshkosh with KW
Doug Arnold B35 to Dayton with NMUSAF

don’t see much trade in Mosquitos the other way!

wasn’t the RAFM’s example moved to Hendon the same way?

    Roger Smith.

Chapter in “Epics of Aviation Archaeology” published by Patrick Stephens Limited way back when. Fuselage moved on side

Why can’t the RAF Museum and the RAAF Museum do a Seagull:Walrus swap – even if they each retain formal ownership of their original airframe?

The Seagull is more relevant to the RAAF and the Walrus is of more relevance to the RAF

    or is that common sensical?

and to think that the FAAM looked at the Seafire, but turned it down as being too corroded……………

I think the Bloch was scrapped

    FE

the Beardmore engine that was obtained for the rebuild and in the interim used to be on show at Cosford has now disappeared from the line up – so presumably they are now at a stage where that is required for the rebuild.

When it’s done and installed in the GW Hangar at Hendon will anybody be able to see it though?:diablo:

    Thinks…………

i wonder what £6m would have done for all or some of the following

The RAFM Hampden – funded a complete restoratation?
The East Kirkby Hampden project – accellerated progress?
The Stirling project – brought back whatever resides in Russia?
The DH Hornet project – brought the wing section from Canada?
The Whitley project – perhaps centralise the diverse parts collections?

    to name just a few

Instead a relatively small number of people have seen a Vulcan fly a few times. The projects above when complete will remain as a homage to the people who flew in them for generations

the plan at the end of the powerpoint presentation seems to show just a complete wing with part of a fuselage on display in the DTM. Is this the limit of the restoration or are they working towards a full restoration of the complete airframe, albeit at the same time concerting/rebuilding it as the civil airliner?

    Bluebird K7

In respect of the use of original structure, the Bluebird project must be the market leaders in straightening out and reusing extremely bent and battered bits of metal.

see their website – it’s amazing!

    Ooops

I’m sorry I started all this!

I certainly had no intention of making a liar of anybody – life’s too short and it’s only an internet forum…………

Was just trying to clarify what went over the pond as I was under the clear impression though that the nose was substantially more than just the glazing section – as were others. I thought I’d seen pictures of a substantially larger lump consistent with the manufacturing break – perhaps before it came into the possession of the RAFM – on show somewhere.

I just seem to remember thinking at the time that “that’s a substantial lump” and would have been an excellent exhibit in its own right in the absence (then) of any other Hampden relic in the UK.

Could it have been so corroded that in less enlighted times only the extreme nose was considered worthy of saving?

Only the front glazing and frame I think Bruce.

…and yes they did regret it.

    Mark

I seem to recall it was a substantial cockpit section rather than the parts you mention – if i remember rightly the section used to be on display in a fort somewhere and a photograph of it there appeared in one of the comics – perhaps an article associated with the Canadian Hampden rebuild
