Cheers, ordered my copy on that sunny ???????? very wet day at Duxford. I was standing in the Upper Barracas gardens when the pair came in over grand harbourd last September so another couple of weeks/months wont make any difference.
All i can say is that if you were not there you missed one of the best airshow/flypast moments that i have ever seen and i have been attending shows since ’78. If you werent there, buy this dvd.
Rob,
I was more than likely stood not far from you! 😮 I always thought that a ‘Legends’ balbo was the most emmotional aviation thing I could ever witness….until last September, it was sensational!
Read Fortress Malta! Buy this DVD!
Also at the next Duxford show the Malta team usually have a stand, go talk to them. A great bunch of people, very friendly. These guys done an amazing job!
I have the Corgi models, on my mantle piece and they always remind me of that beautiful week last September
Yes indeed very good, ‘the calm before the storm’ thats what the cloudy background said to me…… 😮
Would you prefer them to ground an airworthy one and nail it to a pole on the gate?
I think the ‘home’ of the Spitfire is certainly doing it’s fair share of keeping and returning Spitfires to the sky where they belong.
IWM’s ‘real’ Spitfire is about to go one better and be hung from the rafters of the scandolous AIRSPACE. Along with many other rare types….all in the name of preserving our aviation heritage.
I think you’ll find those keeping the Spitfires in the air are the private owners/operators and not IWM.
It can not be cheap carting that thing around the country, I am interested to know at what cost? The idea of PR is to hook people in not take them what they think is ‘The finished article’…..
I wish IWM all the best with it im sure it will do them a good turn….I’d imagine it will get towed, in a similar manor to a CARAVAN!
Surely, those that see the Spit and notice the mistake in the colour scheme would already know about Duxford and no doubt have already visited before, and the purpose of the FSM is to get people that haven’t visited before to visit the museum?
yeah but you could say, why bother visiting because they have bought one to me! Joe Public aint gonna know one from the other…
How much is it to book?
Not so much educational as promotional. The road part is accurate though.
Sounds Expensive! Shipping that around the country…. 🙁
Don’t Solent Sky do something Similar?
For what it’s worth, the wonderful scheme by Merlins over Malta was a great idea, well carried off. Personally, I think the blue’s a bit bright, but it certainly gives you a grand feel for what it might have looked like, and is firmly in my favourite Spitfire schemes. (It’s worth noting also that the quality of the modern MoM scheme was far better than the rough effort that would have been applied by a rushed crew on board the carrier.)
Hope that helps!
Yes indeed, well put! The book you mentioned is superb…thoroughly recommended! 🙂
Flying over Grand Harbour last September it looked fantastic! One moment I’ll never forget.
A real shame they didn’t leave her in the Blue scheme for at least one season 🙁
Sorry Mike J I fail to see how the FSM has a nasty paint scheme, After walking round all the other Spits at Dux me and my Father stood by the FSM for a good twenty mins before one said to the other……..”it’s a mock up!”……… 😮
Ok so we are not hardcore Spitfire fans and to some the paint job might be wrong but what a fantstic piece of publicity for Dux, any plans to put it on the gate with the Hurricane?.
Regards,
John.
Sorry I fail to see how thats “fantstic piece of publicity!”
The UK home of the Spitfire and IWM see fit to purchase and paint a fake one? What on earth is this supposed to achieve?
Does anyone have evidence that the Spitfires used in Malta had blue paint on the top as part of their camouflage?
Some references state that they were painted blue on transit on the ferry carriers… And some decal manufacturers give you blue schemes, though I suspect those are only to sell their product and did not exist when the Spits were offloaded and put to operational use.😉
Spitfires dispatched from USS Wasp on Operation Calander in April 1942 were indeed painted with a ‘Blue’ topside. This desicion was taken after the Wasp had left the UK so various paints were diluted and mixed (mainly USN Blue) and the Spitfires were given a rather crude finish. This was done to help them on there long flight across the med as they were originaly in camo. Not much use over the Med! As Mark V mentioned this was designed to be removed once on Malta however most of these Spitfires were lost within days of their arrival.
Merlins Over Malta did indeed represent this scheme for their adventure last year. Talking to one of the team at Duxford last year it’s important to point out that this blue was not an actual specific paint so no codes exsist for it, so its down to you to guess!
http://www.merlinsovermalta.com has more info!
I may be having a bad day, but…
I posted this to inform UK enthusiasts of an incident to a UK-based vintage aircraft, which could have had serious consequences for the crew and/or anyone on the ground. It still hasn’t been confirmed whether anyone on the ground was hit; a P-51D canopy is quite a substantial item.
With this in mind I find the replies #3 and #4 in rather bad taste.
I think your having bad day.
What is it with this forum…………………..
I wonder where it landed?? 😀
I trust everyone was okay? 🙁
Trendy retro T-shirts with famous BoB film quotes!!!
I wont turn this into a full recital of the BoB film!! 😮
Plastic, yes (well, GRP), hung, no. It’s a marketing tool for which DX have big plans.
“STAND BACK THEN!” this will be interesting… 😀
Bl@@dy ancient threads! 2002 for heaven’s sake..
I read about 8 posts before twigging. Its a bit unsettling to come across contributions from Steve Young.
Lets start new ones unless there is a really good reason not to.
Must admit I started to do the same….. 😮
Well one thing you can not knock is the effort and commitment of The Vulcan Team. As much as it pains me I do empathise with the reasons for the Lottery’s desicion.
Very Sad tho 🙁
Thanks Daviesi!
Glad the Reds approve!! 😀
They are looking good and look forward to seeing them this year at some point.
😎
