I don’t think there is a UK museum that comes close to East Kirkby and the way it seems to send you back in time, giving us just a tiny flavour of what it may have been like. The atmosphere is very special indeed.
Wonderful pictures and still a movie I enjoy watching…..and yes they don’t make em like that anymore! 😮
In the fourth picture with ‘Gibby’ stood infront of the Lanc, Is that a serial number on the underside of the wing? Just curious…….
And yes the last pic makes a great Wall paper!
Thank you for sharing!
I watched a tv programme with regards Luftwaffe 1946, the scarey thing is that they were so far ahead in aviation technology, just they could not implement it.
Some of the aircraft mentioned looked like they could be in Star Wars or some other Sci Fi film! 😮
Quite the opposite.
PK624 is in safe hands. Don’t worry your tiny minds over it.
Very Sad….
Nice place this….. 🙁
Merlins Over Malta for me. Superb!
Ahh….I think I remember that one…..Iraqi paint scheme…..Didn’t ti go into a RAF scheme…Where is it now?
Rlangham…Like you got my first Car and went in 97, been every year since…..Simply AWESOME!
See you there! 😉
As ever, the website suffers from being over corporate (light on fact, long on PR & design)
Cheers
Thats what worries me about Airspace….or should that be ‘Officespace’
Yes it would appear to be that way…I doubt the Lanc would have moved to put it the other side of the Hall…..Shame she always looked good next to the Lanc…….Still B24 a welcome addition…… 🙂
Wasn’t the Wellington in the position now occupied by the Lib?
Here are a few pictures of Malta Spitfires from Jerry Billing ( 185 Squ. )
http://www.jerrybilling.com/jerry_billing_militery_career%20WWII.htmI also mentioned the painting of Spitfires blue to him but he did not remember seeing any blue Spit’s in the sky’s over Malta in his time their.
Dave
Only the USS Wasp Spitfires were painted blue. Many of those destroyed on landing
I overheard this at the Duxford show…. I think Glenn and someone from Corgi explained…
The Spitfires were loaded on the Wasp in a standard Green/Brown/duck egg green? scheme similar to what HAC’s Spitfire used to wear.
The desicion to repaint was taken halfway on route and blue paint which was used for the American WIldcats etc was taken and mixed with other colours black/white etc as well as water so as enough could go around. Paint was applied with brooms and deck brushes so a very uneven finished was produced. Markings were painted around by hand. Therfore no particular paint number is available.
The Merlins Over Malta Spitfire was painted to ‘represent’ a USS Wasp Spitfire.
I think she looks super!
I think a ‘Well Done’ thread is very deserved. I was talking to them at Duxford and to think it was achieved by a very small number of people in their spare time after a days work is truely remarkable, they took some big knocks on the way too.
A wonderful group of people and a wonderful tribute.
Well Done 🙂
Must be an interesting job flying that lead plane (a Piper Seneca?). Look to one side and you have a Spitfire and on the other wing you have a Hurricane. What more can you ask for? 😉 😀
I thought that…..was it a case of “daggadaggadaggagdagga!” :p
Im sure he is a delighted chap. this project is very exciting, loving these pictures! Hurricane picture is particularly nice.
Strange Irony that the “DEFENDERS” are on an island which sadly was never ‘Defended!’ 🙂
Be great if we could get photo’s from each of the stop overs!! 😎
