As for St. Anger, personally I find the production absolutely laughable. The drums alone almost ruin the entire CD. The only song I find myself getting into on the whole album is the opening track.
While this album is definitely “more metal” than Load or Reload, they would have done well to use Bob Rock’s talents as a producer to get a nice production job. I know this is what they were going for, the “live from the floor” sound, but listen to Megadeth’s Youthanasia from 1994. Same recording concept, but it sounds much better. Guess we know who really sits atop the heavy metal hill now, don’t we? 😀
