    Alas AK, you’re incorrigible enthusiast…
It was MiG-21-F13 used in tests. Yes, italics bothers me…even if 106 has not drag at all, trouble would be out accelerating 21, same thing for F-8, F-5..
Or if F-8 has better acc, how it could not, then, out turn 21…
F-106 also has surprisingly good low speed maneuverability, I think there were test that proves it…

There is a W&B manual on English for Fishbed as a gift with a book “Fighter Performance in Practice” at Amazon, eBay..

    Not that difficult.

    – Ghaddafi is terrorizing his own people, no doubt. Libya without him would be similar to Tunisia. But given the fact that his rule is pretty much secular, it still could be even worse.
    – Pretty much all West wants Lybian gas, no doubt, as well. But it’s not so crucial because their stocks are limited, that is why it took so long
    – Libyan rebels surely want to have the money from the gas contracts flowing elsewehre than just in Ghaddafi’s pocket. Whether they would be willing to really make things moving or just fill theior own pockets, remains open
Now, if rebels should prevail in the end, given the fact that it required western military intervention to achieve that, they would be pretty much in the vassal position towards the west. These airstrikes are not cheap and somone will have to pay the bill one day.

I’m not speaking virtually, I happened to be to be in Sarajevo during crisis 20 years ago. There were sick people shelling the city, there were another sick people defending it and lastly third party (so called UN) came with their own interest. Now I hear, people is starving while somebody somewhere “fat”, became “fatter”. They had free education, health, freedom…now they are talked that they lived under terror of Tito’s regime ?!? and they are free at last.
One has to have Michael Moore’s consciousness to see things around us.

I’m not sociologist and I’d like to know what was happening in Libya, is Ghadafi regime terrorizing people or French mercenaries/Libyan traitors wants Libyan oil, to help economic crisis in EU.
Please if somebody knows, share it with us who do not.

Anyhow I admit French pilot’s heroism, I wonder what was satisfaction to off bombs to another country.
Maybe it is lesson for other less developed countries to start building SCUD-like missiles or other means of retaliation and for us to understand when something bad happens.

There are many stories about F-8 as a last of (gun)fighters…I do not think its turn abilities (lift, not to mention thrust limited) and handling are different/better than of other unmaneuverable a/c.
Maybe, only that the crew were air combat trained instead just for interception.
Any graphs ? Words are not good in describing perf.

Yeah, but R-25’s data are questionable..and it is credited with higher TIT than GE-17
Btw spec.thrust and thrust is calculated somewhat more complex, but that’s it…

Both R-95Sh and R-195 are derivate of R-13 and that does not help us anyway.
Russians just do not care about typing or else mistakes (R-25 military thrust or maybe max continuous thrust) that are rewritten in numerous brochures, books, manuals..

Problem is R-25 has lower spec. thrust than older R-11/13 engines as it has lower turbine inlet temp. (like older engines).
I do not know the clue…looks like air bypasses engine core and comes into AB like in TF engines.
Anyway it seems that we exhausted topics……………

I know, there is now a bunch of available data. I wanted us to think a little about them…
There are some parameters that indicate if some data is doubtful. One of parameters is specific thrust. It indicates either military thrust is low or air mass flow is too high for R-25. Other is augmentation ratio, too high for a turbojet.
Btw, titanium can be used only in compressor, material for turbine is some Ni or Co based superalloy.

    experience in engaging F-14s.

I remember when I was young, F-14 was entering service. A/c was credited with awesome high angle of attack capabilities, almost Cobra maneuver (77° untrimmed alpha), high trimmed alpha, fast roll at hi alpha (with crossed yaw-roll controls sometimes leading to flat spin), awesome L/D with spread wings (15) i.e. low drag at slow speeds…ability to fly slow (200 km/h stall at corner speed)… huge control surfaces needed to overcome high a/c inertia. Engine parameters ideal for fuel economy but it lacked thrust, VG wings + deck compatibility gave high weight. Officials tried to highlight AB thrust increase with a/c speed, but that is happening to any other engine. They even gave graphs comparing it with MiG-21 and F-4. Company pilots demonstrated it can outmaneuver everything in vertical rolling scissors. It seems one must doubt everything ??
With years enthusiasm melted and a/c left service with pilots disappointed.

    .

You are kidding me, I’m doubting cited R-25 thrust w/o AB although it is official figure. Augmentation ratio, how it is so high, like in fan engines?? Specific thrust is very low..i.e. engine has very low thrust for air mass flow and given pressure ratio. That indicates turbine inlet temperature lower than in R-11/13. But engine is much newer and published TIT is not low.

one question for the AK, in order not to be bored with current formal or bureaucratic things … how it is (was) possible for aggressor MiG-21 to remain behind the F-14, either in horizontal or vertical maneuvers (if true)…

I know that… I meant to ask how engine has such a high augmentation ratio 6850/4100 (67%), as turbofan engines…how so much air is unused in a core and left for afterburner combustion?
Or such a low specific (military) thrust?

Uh, we should discuss other things…there are plenty of enthusiasm here, flight experience, will to share graphs..
today it is easy to find IAS/TAS explanation on internet..here is some..

    http://http://www.mathpages.com/home/kmath282/kmath282.htm

Also, to find conversion calculators (I do not know their accuracy)..
    http://http://www.hochwarth.com/misc/AviationCalculator.html

Or to do manual conversion from attachments..

I’m not sure how Tumansky R-25 engine is credited with such a high augmentation ratio (4100-6850/7100 kg)…as it is turbofan ??
