First Rafales were illuminated by Libyan alert radars but Rafale’s Spectra protection modules made any Libyan AA attempt useless.

    http://chhindits.blogspot.com/2011/03/xclusive-details-of-what-16-rafales-are.html

I also read something quite similar on Combat Aircraft magazine, but could not find detailed infos on Internet, or other magazines. Has anyone more infos ?

Soviet era fighters has always been more manoeuvrable and agile than Western design. They were the first to use trust vectoring on a flying a/c… and while the USAF was studying low RCS, they thought the future would be to agile a/c, not subsonic “stealth” a/c.
So it’s not surprising they do well in simulation against Typhoon, Rafale etc…

There is a interdependency between US and UK, so when the Pentagone and US’s defense industry are in crisis, so are the MoD and UK’s defense industry.
France, Germany and Italy are suffering far less (each in accordance to their own dependence with the US’s defense industry).

Thereby proving my point : Air power alone, can not win a war.

First you need to know what are the objectives of the war. If it’s to kill everyone, Iroshima is an exemple of how to win a “war” with air supremacy.

The IDF tools i the conflict was MBT´s and air supremacy.

MBT and land forces didn’t fare too good as well if I remember.
If it’s a counter insurgency type of “war”, then no amount of firepower (air or ground) is going to work properly. Ask Russia, US, Israel and France.

The UK (which knew about Lampyridae) had a shaped stealth technology demonstrator project in the 1990s, Replica, which was used as leverage to get Tier 1 partner access to JSF.

The UK got Tier 1 because they paid more than the others.

Then again we need to define correctly what is a “stealthy” aircraft, and what is a 5th gen aircraft as well.
In order to evade detection, the most effective way is the tactics you employ rather that the aircraft performances alone.
Until now USAF “stealth” bombers prefer to operate at night in order to avoid detection despite been “stealthy”…

Early “stealth” aircraft for the US has been limited to bombers, and specially design in accordance to the US tactics of high altitude flying, due to the fact that most potential threat to the US are far away (U2), and early belief that if you could fly high enough you can’t be hit (well they were wrong, yet it’s the same propaganda about F22,F35).
Europeans during the cold war had to face a potential enemy much closer to their borders, and low flying aircraft was the most economical way to go for strike mission, with high flying interceptor to counter long range enemy bombers.
Ironically the F117 supposedly “stealth” bomber was shot down at least once (the U2 as well), while the F15 has had so far (well as far as we know at least) no lost due to enemy fire.

The cost of these programs has been quite expensive for the USAF and until now the results are far from conclusive.
Since WWI, tactics were already in place in order to avoid been detected (i.e always attact with the sun behind). Avoiding detection is as old as aviation itself, and to say that Europeans only recently awoke to “stealth” is not true : delta wings offers RCS reduction similar to the wing design of the B2, storm shadow stealth cruise missile, Lafayette frigates (among the first stealthy frigates in the world)…

Thanks to NASA the US has been able to extensively reseach composites materials for heat reduction, weight reduction, greater strenth etc… and it happen that these same materials have a RCS reduction properties. And so the US has been among the first (thank to massive funding) to apply those properties to aviation. The internal bay doors of the B2, B1, F117 etc are from the bombers of the WWI and WWII, and the B52 isnt stealthy because of internal bay doors, and the F117 isnt 5th gen because of its shapes…

Been invisible to the enemy (or luring him) is part of modern warfare, and can be done with different methods (paint, jamming, flying close formations, decoys, low RCS…).

Sperbug is not a bad choice for Japan. But one would have expected that Rafale and F-15S Silent Eagle should be of serious interest to them as well. At least to evaluate.

The rafale wasnt proposed due to the beleive that Japan would never go for a non-us plane…

The cost of building the F-35 fighter jet, set to replace a large part of the US warplane fleet, is “unaffordable” in its current version and must be reviewed, the Pentagon’s top acquisition official said Thursday.

“Over the lifetime of this program, the decade or so, the per-aircraft cost of the 2,443 aircraft we want has doubled in real terms,” said Ashton Carter, the under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics.

Said differently, that’s what it’s going to cost if we keep doing what we’re doing. And that’s unacceptable. It’s unaffordable at that rate

AFAIK they use the same pod, so I don’t think you will be able to differenciate Tornados from Typhoon’s strike.
I do not know what the stars are for, but a picture of a Typhoon with marks from bombing missions is available I beleive on the Typhoon news thread.

AFAIK, SPECTRA is said to provide the ability to the rafale to passively detect threats 360 around the a/c in the EM, IR, and laser spectrum in order to provide a better situational awareness.
This include to be able to regulate the EM emissions in correspondance to the mission profile, and while I can’t as of today prove that it is an operational capabilities, I find it to be a very likely theory.
Why ? Because SPECTRA was design to detect and locate any EM sources 360 around the a/c.
Let’s imagine a senario where two rafales try to detect a vlo a/c. Stealth technology is not so much about absorbing radar waves, as it’s about having shape that will redirect them away from the incoming source. Now if rafale A illuminates the target and rafale B fly in order to detect any waves that could bounce back in a likely direction what would SPECTRA do and how would it do it ?
Typhoon is also said to be able to pinpoint the location of any EM emissions, in fact any a/c with sensors fusion is said to be able to do that. So it’s logic to assume that they will use any EM indiscretion be it from the target itself or from any waves bouncing back on it.

See? “Little things” such as this quietly build up the Tiffy’s capabilities, sneaky.

    Well with £39 million more…
