This will provide further discriminating performance for the Eurofighter Typhoon, which is already the world’s most advanced multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the market.

Yeah I forgot to put a brain wash alert :dev2: !!

@ Bluewings : I would be interested in reading your sources with the different range for the radars. I’ve been looking and apart from other forum I struggle to find any reliable sources. Thanks in advance.

$2.4 Billion to upgrade 52 Mirage fighters? Are they a bit touched in the head department (i.e. mad) or have I read this wrong?…

nitially four to six aircraft are to be upgraded in France, while the rest will be done in India by state-owned defence undertaking Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, with transfer of technology from Dassault and Thales.

    @Swerve :

Air Marshal Norman Anil Kumar Browne will be the new Chief of the Air Staff. He will assume office on retirement of Air Chief Marshal P.V. Naik on July 31.

@TR1&mack8: thanks, I’m quite surprised though.

BTW the majority of the strikes were done with dumb bomb during the Kargill conflict, although there also was the first use of LGB by a M2K iirc.

    Nic

The IAF has for long, argued that the upgrade would transform the aircraft into top-notch combat fighters. The Mirage, which was deemed to be the best combat aircraft in high-altitude conditions, was used to great effect by the IAF for precision strikes during the Kargil conflict, and helped liberate the heavily-defended Tiger Hill.

    DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
    AND
    DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY
    PRESENTATION TO THE
    HOUSE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE
SUBCOMMITTEE ON TACTICAL AIR AND LAND FORCES
    U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
SUBJECT: Air Force Tactical Aviation Programs
    COMBINED STATEMENT

Here come the national security concern

The Joint Strike Fighter is the Department of Defense`s largest acquisition program, and its importance to our national security is immense.

the JSF will become a linchpin for future coalition operations and will help to close a crucial capability gap that will enhance the strength of our security alliances.

The restructure resulted in increased funding for development and production in accordance with Joint Estimate Team II estimates, reduced procurement by 122 aircraft

Gosh I love their job, get more to deliver less !!! (these guys never met with french president Sarkosy !)

The FY12 PB called for an additional $4.6 billion to complete the development effort, held F-35 procurement in FY12 at 32 aircraft, and reduced procurement by 124 aircraft. This restructure puts the program on solid ground(),

Development testing of the common mission system and flight sciences for CTOL and CV is now scheduled to complete in the first quarter of 2016

This thing is never going to be operational by 2016

Final Block 3 software is planned to deliver to flight test in 2015, to allow completion of the mission system development in the first quarter of calendar 2016.

The original contract delivery dates for the first three years of production are all late to their original schedules.

Lockheed-Martin Aeronautics Company (LM Aero) valued at $3,887,418,000 (Target Price) for the purchase of 30 JSF aircraft for the U.S.,

And I thought the USAF version was the one with the least trouble… Looks like the Royal Navy brand new CVFs will have to look at other options.

    Actually…

The Captor-E next generation AESA radar builds upon technology developed in the
Technology Demonstrator Programme and for the M Scan radar, relying heavily on the
existing ‘back-end’ processor and receiver with an optimised large array featuring the
addition of an innovative re-positioner. This extends the radar’s field of regard to +/-100
degrees which is some 50% wider than traditional ‘fixed plate’ AESA radars.
The very large Typhoon aircraft nose (so that’s were comes the big nose complexe it seems) allows for a very high power aperture antenna coupled
with a wide field of regard to offer unmatched performance in the export market place.
Key ‘All weather’ radar capabilities include:
    • Multimode A/A and A/G fire control and weapon support
    • Increased air-to-air range (So more range after all)
    • Faster detection and tracking of multiple targets
    • Improved tracking performance
    • Simultaneous air-to-air and air-to-ground modes
    • Extended missile guidance
    • Increased operational performance and availability
    • Reduced life cycle cost
    • Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) search and track
    • Sea surface search

The wide field of regard provides significant benefits in both air to air and air to ground
engagements allowing the Typhoon to turn away from, but still engage, target aircraft and
carry out high resolution Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging whilst maintaining a safe
    distance from enemy forces.

Which is where I admire the Captor-E

    Conclusion
The Captor-E wide field of regard AESA radar will be unmatched in the export market place.
This will provide further discriminating performance for the Eurofighter Typhoon, which is
already the world’s most advanced multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft available on the
    market.

As you see, even they don’t brag about detection range. But their conclusion is that the great angular view of the radar is going to be the edge over other systems.

When is the projected in-service date for the f-35 now? Is it still 2013?

    More like 2016…

While it is true that Captor-E is an upgrade from Captor-M, there is no indication that Captor-E will retain the same performances in terms of range than Captor-M.
Many modifications will have to be done including the mission computers, in order to process the information from the radar.
Going from mechanical to electronical is a more thorough change than from PESA to AESA.
Beside those informations are classified aren’t they ?

It’s various systems/sensors have been tested on CATBIRDS, and production representatative aircraft, etc.., so there’s a fair degree of certainty as to their performance.

Lol don’t take me wrong. Having test beds is important. But despite having the long bow barge in order to thest the PAAMS system, the new destroyer of the royal navy had trouble using them when it came to actual system integration…
So until the system is fully operational on a flying F35, all we can say is that the program is ambitious..

I’m in agreement with you. My question was to those who felt that the current Typhoon/Rafale are already on par with the F-35 in terms of avionics/capabilities.

It’s the F35 which is not currently in par with anything…
