Legends – word of mouth
Hi Sconnor,
I think it is a good point you raise on here. I don’t want to getting into the heated debate areas that are common here.
There is without doubt an element of “taking a horse to water” as I have a load of friends who would love the show but getting them to go is another matter. That said I do think there are things that those of us who are passionate about the show can do.
Some years ago I plucked up enough courage to ask for a load of leaflets from TFC and distributed them at work, at stations and at tourist information offices. I wouldn’t pretend to have made much of a difference but I did feel in a very small way I was contributing to a show I am driven to attend and publicise each year.
I think there is a role to play with “word of mouth with a bit of colour”, I think most of us must know of notice boards that would only be enhanced by putting a flyer or an A3 poster up to grab peoples attention. I know this sounds a little amateurish but if you spoon feed people they won’t be interested, if you make it more public (I do feel it could do with more exposure to the masses) then if it turns a head maybe a few will come along.
I would happily try and do this again, even if it didn’t bring about more than two or three more people coming through the gates at least it didn’t cost the organisers anything.
Skyraider
(Great DVD’s btw)
I’d just like to add how chuffed I am to see these photos. I have only seen this beautiful aircraft once before, static at FL 2004. To have some glimpses of her, “as God Intended”, is superb.
Now what are the train times to Bournemouth…..
One Happy Skyraider
Flies? – and there was me hoping for a Cheese and Buchon. Sorry, it’s been a long day.
Thanks very much for posting. I tend to agree with your thoughts, more than a touch of the hybrid about it!
As a (unfortunately badly educated) Sea Fury admirer I was wondering if anyone has a photo of the Griffin Powered version they could post? I have seen the various configurations of tempest/tornado but must confess to not seeing this one.
Currency on the Buchon
I note that the much respected Nigel Lamb undertook the recent flight in the Buchon. Was this an aircraft that he flew a great deal in the past, i.e. the OFMC example? Considering the last of the type to fly here was in 1999/2000 it must have been, to say the least, demanding to take one of these up again after all this time.
I fear that as I am so far back down the line of these comments that it may not have much impact but here goes.
I just wanted to give my own personal thanks to the TFC for bringing what I consider to be one of the sexiext warbirds on the planet to Legends:
The “Bradshaw” Sea Fury
I know it didn’t fly but I do think that they got it here on static was quite a coup. It was also very refreshing to see John Bradshaw talking to enthusiasts on the flightline. I understand this aircraft is up for sale so it may be the last chance we get to see it, it will be such a shame to see this beautiful and important aircraft leave these shores. Maybe, with a bit of luck, a UK based collector will save it but if that is not he case may I also thank Mr Bradshaw for giving me the opportunity to see it.
Thanks again to all at TFC, I think this to me was an indication of how much effort you made in what is increasingly demanding & difficult times.
Walking from Whittlesford
I have found recently that gaining access to Duxford from Whittlesford is a very straightforward option (can be done in 25 mins at sensible pace). I would like to add one word of warning. I don’t think Duxford want to encourage people to walk round this route so there are no facilities for pedestrians to cross the junction entries and exits on the main M11/A505 roundabout. If it is gridlocked then walking across is relatively safe but if it is free moving be very careful.
I do have to agree that the Red Lion offers a very pleasant refuge whilst waining for that train. 🙂
Although not a book, I feel the video “Sea Fury” (narrated by Richard Baker) is one of the better reference sources available. It is based on RNHF operations, primarily on their 2 seater but it gives a good technical overview. I think it is still available through normal aviation related websites.
