A lot of claims and most of that wrong. In most of that cases it was the shortage of money or lack of technical base to buy the prefered aircraft in the end.
F.e. the Germans never indended to buy the F-14. The F-4F was bought as an interim fighter till the arrival of the TKF/EF at first. Just the P-530 Cobra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_YF-17 was a serious option temporary.

Well saying that it was a lack of money or lack of technical base is stating the obvious. The lack of money to pay for the prefered option usually leads to compromises.Ploitics and regime changes are another, but I’d like to know exactly what I got wrong since all of what I’ve posted were at one time proposals.

So,in light of this I shall say for this post, not all are “prefered options” but proposels.Which I think would still fit in here.

Actually I think that is the Ka-35 for the Russian Army that is used in the ground surveillance.More or less like a Russian EH-60B SOTAS.Great picture of it though.

    Hi F-14!

Well I see things rather differently than you, The whole political domino effect that scared the US leaders in the 60s has proven itself to bel rubbish… For instance the communists HAD to take over in Vietnam in order for their leaders and people to see that system just does not work… If the US had stayed in Vietnam into the 80s it would probably have acheived little more than to drag this conflict in the same manner as the one in Afghanistan is doing. As long as the war was on against the “imperialist hordes” all government shortcomings could easily be placed on the Western shoulders.

Now look at VietNam, it is following China’s example and opening up the economy to local and foreign ownership. The same can be said about the Taliban. After Western armies move out how long would it take for them to run down the Afghan economy into the ground? And then, who would they blame for it?

On the poppy fields issue, if I recall correctly during their reign the Taleban they actually destroyed local opium production only to see it reinstated in full after the US led troops kicked them from power in Afghanistan… Which is quite the exact opposite from what you state.

Finally, Thailand has a hand full of Swedish built Gripens, certainly not Flankers and the Phillipines has n o t h i n g at all, lest Fulcrums…

Maybe you were actually refering to Indonesia and Malaysia but to claim they both bought Russin aircraft out of of some sort of “Neo-marxist alignment” with Moscow is way beyond the reasonable, don’t you agree?

    Regards,

    Hammer

Actually,we think along the same lines.I believe that sooner or later,we will have to sit down and talk to the taliban.Maybe,in 50 years..even be allies with them.Who knows,I mean we NUKED Japan, today, they are one of our biggest allies.Same for Germany, with all the bombs we dropped on them.I guess only time will tell. And about the Thai Flankers and Phil.Fulcrums,I was being sarcastic.

At any rate,I think America has enough issues on the homefront to deal with then continue a pointless, unpopular war for another 20 years.

I’m so sick of hearing “yea, lets leave Afghanistan/Iraq and let it fall, then the whole region will fall”. This is the same CHILDISH NONSENSE that was being said during Vietnam.”If we withdraw from Vietnam, the Communists will have all of SEA for the pickings”.Yea,I remember that everythime I see a RTAF Flanker or a Philippines Fulcrum.

As upsetting as this is,it is another loss in a long, pointless war.Operation Anaconda saw a few Chinooks get lost in the same way as this one. So,in a way, this isn’t suprising.Chinooks are not the best thing for hot/high ops. And to quad bike: Why would other nations want to send their aircraft in to get shot down and soldiers killed for no reason!?This is exactly why alot of the NATO nations have been WITHDRAWING from not only Afghanistan, but Iraq as well.

yea,I believe that Nightwatch is more a name for the offical mission, kinda like Looking Glass.Nightwatch being the emergency airborne command post near DC,which in the past was the EC-135J.Its mission was also called Nightwatch. The european based EC-135H was called Silk Purse. Not too sure what the PACAF one, including EC-135Js,were called. So,thats the long anwser, that Nightwatch is more of the name of the mission/assigment rather then the offical name of the aircraft.

It was never ‘intended‘ for naval use.

Maybe Proposed would have been a better word…

Well,I guess if they did mod an Y-7 it’d be no worse then Russia modding an An-72 to make the An-71,which I believe was intended for naval use.

well picture quality is not that good.. you’ve been warned:D

Could this be a side proof of China got reliable catapult technology now?

With the lack of dihedral of the horizontal stabilizer and larger radome pylon,it looks like the Yak-44E,or a version of it.Be great to see that project finally see the light of day.

Libya was a pretty big user of the SF-260,but good luck figuring out how many,if any,are operational.Libya donated some to Burkino Faso, Burundi Nicaragua and Uganda. There were also some shot down over Chad.

Singapore had some, but they retired them and passed them onto Indonesia. So,as far as I know,Indonesia is an active user.

Sri Lanka and Somalia also had some and both of theirs are also retired. The Sri Lanka ones were usually used in the COIN role.

    Ireland retired theirs.

I actually like the idea of using the UH-72 as an OH-58D replacement.Small enought to be a scout, but big enough to be used for other missions should it be required.

So,exactly how many Su-24s have been lost thus far? The reason I ask is about,I’d say 2 weeks or so ag,I heard about a “fighter bomber” crew (both pilot and WSO apparently, but def 2x crew) that elected to eject and let their plane crash after being ordered to bomber either protesters or oil fields.I was at work,so I didn’t catch the whole thing, but my first thought was it was a Fencer.Anyone have any details. For what its worth,I believe this happened AFTER the Mirages flew to Malta.
