Although I also read that Saudi Arabia was considered a possible Typhoon Export counrty and dispite the fact they bought other British aircraft including the Lightning,Tornado,and Hawk,I don’t see them getting the Typhoon in the post 9/11 politics.The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom and the United States has been strained and good example of this is the fact Saudi Arabia wanted to order around 100 F-16s to replace its aging F/RF-5Es.This deal seems to have fallen through for no reason with nothing new being reported on it.If the Saudi goverment was denied F-16s,I highly doubt they would get the Typhoon.
Ok,I’ll keep this simple and leave politics out of it. The fact is the Afghan military,Air Force,Army,whatever,is not up to par on training or logistics to support A-10s or AH-64As.Most of the aircraft (Mig-21s,Mig-19s,Mi-8,Mi-24s) are wrecks and in disrepair.If they can’t maintain these older aircraft,how do you think they could fly and maintain an Apache gunship with laser guided missiles? At most,I’d suggest maybe say PC-7 or PC-9 COIN aircraft,maybe some surplus UH-1s with some 2.75in rocket pods as gunships.
I’ve heard that India picked the Rafale M over the Mig-29K for its new naval fighter.That said,it may also pick the E-2C Hawkeye,as France did to work with it’s Rafales.And as far as the issue with the catapult goes,if it is true they went with the Rafale,they would probbley need a catapult installed anyway,so that issue would be redundant.Then,as Aerospacetech pointed out,the Yak-44 is only a mockup,whichwould mean it would take time and money to get the program going again and get one into the air,whereas the E-2C is in production and could be obtained sooner.
[QUOTE=PhantomII]Rocky,
So, Soviet MiG’s would likely never have encountered either the F-102 or F-106. The F-104 and F-101 were tasked with nuclear strike in Europe, and I doubt any MiG would catch either of them (the MiG-21 can outrun the F-101, but not for long before it’s fuel supply is exhausted) in full afterburner at low (or high) level.
There were 1 or 2 F-102As shot down over North Vietnam by Mig-21s.They had been deployed to South Vietnam to defend against the North Vietnamese IL-28/H-5 Beagle bombers,which were never used.
Greece selected the EF2000 Typhoon as its new fighter,but has yet to place an order.I believe they were wanting to order around 60 examples.In South Korea,it was beaten by the F-15K Strike Eagle and Singapore may take the F-15T Strike Eagle over it in it’s compatition.I heard some place Canada and Austraila were possible customers of the Typhoon,but I can’t see Canada having the money for it,Australia,maybe.
