USS Alaska

Closest we got to a Battle-cruiser.
Closely followed by the Iowa class BB…..
As for ships still in service, I would have to say the INS Viraat.
I always loved the Hermes, and got to see her once in person. I love the looks of the British fleet carriers, and she is the last still in service.
The Grumman F-10F, so ugly it is kinda cute.
Van Halen Right Now
Aerosmith Deuces are WildTheres also a Rolling Stones song that was always my favorite and I can’t remember what it was called. 🙁
If it is the one from the Vietnam war TV series, I think it was Paint It Black.
My list would have:
Last Time by the Stones,
Question by CSNY, Question (and the entire Days of the Future Passed album) by The Moody Blues,
Carolina in my Mind by James Taylor (the original with the Beatles backing up, from his first album, not the sucky slow version he redid later),
Blue Skies by The Allman Bros,
Badge by Cream, and
Come and Get Your Lovin by Redbone (hehe)… 😀
WOW!!!!
Hey You took me offf my feet by posting those superb Photo Yes U were Correct … i was looking for X-22..!!:) Thanks SOC…. X-22 might see revival in form of Skycar
Hey one More request can u Post & Name another Jet Powered US VSTOL project… which used the most queer vertical lift principal… I dont remember exact details I saw it on Discovery… It used a conventional Jet Engine,…. But for lift purposes it used to Open Vents on Spine of aircraft…. and used the power of airsucked into those vents
to lift aircraft Up…Heck:mad: I cant explain correctly
Though not American, as such.
Ok. So what is Russia’s defence budget ? Is it in any shape to go about invading other countries ??
‘And that has what to do with your moralizing? So in your dream world. it is OK to kill the enemy with a weapon costing $X, but not one costing $Y, or using an armed forces whose budget consumes X% GDP, but not Y% GDP? I actually prefer us to spend more on defense, and cut back on welfare, Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid, etc, since at least there is Constitutional authority for the National Defense, unlike the other Ponzi schemes my taxes pay for. I have read the Constitution a few times, and have yet to read where healthcare is a Right…..
Gotcha….

Yes they have, and rather effectively too I might add. Thanks for noticing! But did you ever stop to consider that if some idiot hadn’t decided to go on some foolish and asinine moral crusade and use airliners to knock over buildings, your precious terrorists might not be being hunted down by the US military right now?
Doesn’t the Peruvian AF has a wide range of platforms for the relatively small size of that country.

My condolences for the grief-stricken families of both the commander and the captain.
Odd, where is your moralizing in the thread on the Su-22 crash? Funny how you pick and choose your moral observations, depending on what country the ‘weapons of war… used for claiming lives & destroying property’ crash in……..
How about the Scharnhorst vs. the Des Moines/Salem CAs? Sure the Des Moines might not have the larger caliber guns, but 20 rounds per minute per 8″ gun? Whew, that might do some damage. 🙂
But would the Scharnhorsts 11″ have shreded them before they were in range for the 8″ to be effective?
Just looked up the Alaska class heavy cruisers with a Google search….very nice looking ships!! Almost smaller copies of the Iowas, minus one stack, but very similar, and heavily armed (12″ inch guns)…they would’ve done pretty well vs. a similar axis ship, I imagine…
Mark
Yes, great looking ships. Just to late to get into much beside shore bombardment.
I have always loved the Alaskas, for some reason. Perhaps cause it was as close as we got to having battle cruisers in the US Navy.
You might consider the USN lucky that they managed to keep clear of BC’s. As one famous RN Admiral, Admiral Beatty, commented on our BC’s at Jutland: ‘There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today.’.
Very true. And they were not even classified as BCs, but they were as close as you could get. Next to the Iowas, the best looking ships of the US Navy, IMHO.
What about the Salem CA with her automatic 8″ turrets vs. the Bismarck?
I’ve always wondered about the Alaska/Guam vs the Gneisenau/Scharnhorst.

Here is a site devoted to just that question..
Looks at the best of each major player in WWII.
The Cavour, the second italian Aircraft Carrier started its trials yesterday
Do you have any info/pics?
i understand but just think about the capability for the RAN with say a carrier with around say 1-1 and a half fighter squadron and a couple of E-2 2000’s…….that would bring some fire power 🙂
They would have had one if the Falklands War hadn’t happened….. 😀
The Army helo pilots is a surprise! The Navy/Marine ones isn’t. I never thought of rotary craft pilots being recruit for the airlines. Is it as common as fix wing pilots? I talking about pilots for jetliners.
He flew with a bunch of them in Electras, 727s and L1011s, but as I said, this was back in the 70s and 80s (he retired from Eastern in 1988). He figured the sounds of bullets whizzing past their ears kind of honed their talent, along with the tree top flying. 😀
