Two RAF Tornado GR4s collided mid-air and crashed

A helicopter airlifted two airmen to a hospital in Inverness while efforts to find the missing pair were called off due to poor visibility and bad weather.

“The search and rescue phase of the mission was terminated at 7.04pm yesterday evening,” Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman Fred Caygill said.

Ready for what, flight testing?

There are other projects out there, but if they’re not flying already, they wont be in service before 2018.

TD (Technology Demonstrator) aircraft’s for first flight, and even AMCA will have two TD aircraft’s and then Prototype aircraft’s, so real thing will come out only in late years of this decade or next

Japanese ATD-X should be ready by 2015-16 period . and followed by India and S Korea which will be close race in 2017-18 period .

Buddy in a certain agency near Bangalore 😉 told me that AMCA Design is already Frozen and after taking some further stealth modification :eek:as requested by air force .work will start this year and target year has been around 2017-19 period so i m betting on Japan to bring out their 5th gen aircraft first .

As per Nikhil T @ Br has come up to $166 mn per Rafale (20 year life cycle costs) approximates to $69M each, without the annual maintenance costs.
and So Typhoon was nearly $41 mn more expensive than the Rafale per bird. This includes all costs though, not just the sticker price.

How cheap is Rafale compared to Typhoon :confused:

Rafale much cheaper than Typhoon; govt rules out review

The entire MMRCA project cost would have gone up by around Rs 25,000 crore if Typhoon had been selected over Rafale,” a top defence ministry source said on Thursday.

“The fact is that the cost deferential between Typhoon and Rafale was very high… it would cost India around 22% to 25% more if the former had been selected. No government can agree to so much extra,” the source said.

IAF wanted aircraft with higher endurance mid way as usual , DRDO selected Embraer after inputs from IAF on their requirements and after all negotiations was done and Embraer was all set to be ordered , IAF asked DRDO to select a bigger aircraft with higher endurance , but DRDO asked IAF if they were ready to face delays since again new aircraft needs to be selected and then negotiations and re-design and all other things , IAF asked for a Refueling probe which was added and agreed to settle for that , but asked DRDO to go for a bigger plane . So no one forced IAF to settle for this particular aircraft. they are happy with it for now but want some thing of Phalcon type awacs , and DRDO’s has worked with bigger aircraft’s for awacs roles particularly ill fated Hawker Siddeley HS 748

some clarity on DRDO Awacs program

1 ) Yes current orders are only for three , but contract has mention of additional three follow up order which is most likely to be the case .

    2) Total requirement for DRDO based AWACS over the decades will be more then 20 nos , that includes IAF/NAVY/ Coast Guard / and possibly R&AW more of intelligence gathering missions .

    3) IAF wanted better aircraft from current Embraer aircraft selected , but settled to avoid further delays in the projects , so it is pretty clear that after 3 or possibly 6 aircraft , a bigger aircraft will be chosen and phalcon styled radar mount will be there

MMRCA pie was every one wanted to have , but have left many dis pointed , saab still hopes to sell gripen , Russian still pushing mig-35 , us topping it with their f-35 offer ,i blame Indian government for not listening to IAF , to many aircraft’s were involved and only RFI / RFP were not send to china for J-10
