Engine airworthiness??? Isn’t it already tested, as stated below:

Airworthiness can be only tested when the aircraft is powered from kaveri engine only recent test was done keeping the engine in the payload section below picture of kaveri placed on Tu-16 will give you an idea how it was done

What about the Morale of Pilots who test a unknown engine with a airframe not yet cleared IOC?

thats why there are test pilots to fly new aircrafts with new systems ,Test pilots are more capable of sensing trouble

Actually there is nothing great about the kaveri engine integration ,Tejas PV-1 will be integrated with kaveri only to test the engine airworthiness (and also to keep morale of the scientist high) but it will not enter any production only new Kaveri a joint venture with Snecma will enter production by 2015 at the best and around 80 Tejas block-1 will be powered by Ge engines till the new engine is ready

DRDO’s UAV test range in Chitradurga by 2011

Unmaned Air Vehicles (UAV’s) soaring over Chitradurga skies will soon be a familiar sight, as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will establish a world class aero test range facility at Kudapura Kaval, near Chitradurga city, in three years.

Speaking to reporters at the ‘Aerosem 2008’ on Friday, Chief Controller (Research and Development), Dr Prahlada, said that the test range facility at Kudapura Kaval to be set up at a cost of Rs 1000 crore will be used to test UAV’s, parachutes and bombs.

“The Karnataka government has agreed in-principle to allot 4,200 acres of land and the Ministry of Defence will purchase the land at a cost of Rs 12 crore,” he said.On the indigenous UAV’s Nishant and Lakshya developed by the DRDO, he said that a roadmap will be prepared to meet the requirements of the armed forces.

Besides, he said that the State government had evinced interest in the Nishant for possible use against insurgency.

Prahlada said that the State Home Minister VS Acharya who inaugurated ‘Aerosem 2008’ had enquired about the capabilities of Nishant and if it could be used in insurgency operations.

Kaveri engine for LCA in 2009 The much-delayed indigenous Kaveri engine will be fitted to the Light Combat Aircraft (Tejas) as the engine has successfully completed all air-worthy tests, said T Mohana Rao, Director, Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).

The GTRE is manufacturing the Kaveri engine and the programme had begun way back in 1998.“The latest test that was conducted in Russia in September has yielded positive results and we are hopeful to fit the engine to the LCA by the end of 2009,” he said.

NICE! GR3A standard, by the look of it, too. I wonder how long Oman will keep them?

as long as india builds them perhaps

I have read mig-25R’s were used for roles such as giving wider pictures in enviromental problems such as floods, forrest fires and more

IAF MIG-25 were used by national scientist to do research on weather and solar eclipses

Abhimanyu Iaf is in catch 22 situation it cannot get new fighters for low cost and even simple demand for new jets like MMRCA is bragged for years (8 years) after mki and mmrca we will be not inducting any new jet till 2025 untill pak-fa hits production , so Tejas will be inducted in numbers i think figure should hit 200 mark best is 250 and worst is 150 ,

2015 is too early to test even any MCA prototype unless work and design has been finished and approved as per ASR of IAF ,which seems quite unlikely to me

Yes I do remember, but it was only components of elta radar with bulk being OUR OWN MMR. Now it seems we are importing the complete radar set.

After Kaveri this is certainly the biggest setback for LCA, as IAF will not revert back to MMR after seeing the ISRAELI RADAR POTENTIAL, which will be anyway first attempt radar.

Venky if you have followed Lca development as i do ,Elta was to provide interim 2032 for testing weapons program and latter MMR will come ,Desi MMR with help from Israeli is been tested in ground rigs in Israel and also article mentions that 2032 is interim Radar

In another setback for indigenousation, MMR is being put on back burner after Kaveri Engine

LCA to be fitted with Israeli multi-mode radar

    Ravi Sharma

BANGALORE: The indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas will, after years of delay, soon be fitted with its primary mission sensor, the multi-mode radar (MMR).

P.S. Subramaniam, Programme Director, Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), the defence laboratory that is designing the LCA, told The Hindu that “airworthy units” of the Israeli – manufactured MMR would be arriving here early next week for integration into the aircraft. The Elta designed and developed MMR, Elta EL/M-2052 which will be an interim option since India is developing an indigenous one, has already undergone tests on the flight test bed and ground rig in Israel.

One of the most crucial pieces of equipment on any fighter aircraft, the MMR determines the operational effectiveness of the machine, with no fighter aircraft being in a position to perform as one without an MMR.

In the LCA the MMR’s primary role will be to detect and locate targets, process the information, lock on the target and pass this input to the mission computer. From the mission computer this information will be utilised by the pilot as he contemplates weapon release activity. The MMR will also create ground and contour maps when selected.

The long delay in the arrival of the MMR has without doubt pushed the Rs.6,000-crore LCA programme back by many a year. Though initially ADA had intended to use the Ericsson Microwave Systems PS-05/A MMR, it was decided in the early 1990s to indigenously develop one.

But the joint efforts by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (Hyderabad) and Electronics and Radar Development Laboratory (Bangalore) along with coordination from the Centre for Airborne Studies (CABS) failed to come up to expectations. This resulted in the ADA running weaponisation tests on the LCA with a weapon delivery pod, which is not a primary sensor, being forced to keep critical tests on hold.

Venky it had been decided long time ago that ELTA radars will be used till Desi MMR is ready this is not any kind of set back at all
