IAF to get 18 Sukhois replaced
President A P J Kalam’s joyride in a Sukhoi fighter jet may have given a new lease of life to the ageing fleet of the fighter aircraft. Encouraged by Kalam’s sortie on Thursday, the Indian Air Force (IAF) would now go ahead with its plans to send 18 ageing Sukhoi aircraft back to Russia to replace them with new ones. “We are going to replace 18 new Sukhoi planes with the old ones from Russia,” said Air Chief Marshal S P Tyagi after the Passing Out Parade (POP) at IMA here. A contract in this regard would be signed shortly with Russia, he said. Besides this, India would also purchase 108 more fighters. When asked whether all fighter aircraft would be purchased from Russia only, he said nothing has been finalised so far. “The talks are on in this regard,” he said. To a question whether India would buy F-16s from the US, he said the Air force is currently evaluating the aircraft and any decision would be taken thereafter. On the Thursday’s MiG-29 air-crash in Gujarat, the Air Chief Marshal said an inquiry is currently going on to ascertain the cause of the accident and dismissed suggestion that there was some technical fault in the aircraft. In this regard, he pointed out that the rate of air-crashes has come down rapidly in India.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun work to arm its frontline fighter jets with supersonic cruise missiles being developed jointly with Russia, a report said Monday. “We need only small changes to be made,” Sivathanu Pillai, chief executive of the Indian-Russian firm BrahMos Aerospace told the Press Trust of India (PTI).
“But it will be a giant leap because if we deploy aircraft with BrahMos missiles, we would be the first country to deploy supersonic airborne missiles,” Pillai was quoted as saying.
Pillai said the modifications were being carried out for India’s Russian-built Sukhoi-30 multi-role jet fighters.
“Already the needful modifications are being worked simultaneously at BrahMos Aerospace, IAF and Hindustan Aeronautics,” he said but did not give a date for when the smaller cruise missiles would be fitted to the Sukhois.
India has already fitted some of its warships with 300-kilometre (186-mile) BrahMos missiles and is currently working on a version for its land forces.
India and its largest military supplier, Russia, are also trying to sell the supersonic missile in Asian arms markets.
