Being overweight by 1000kgs is not the fault of the engine. Would the engine have been powerfully enough if the Texas structure and payload was lighter.

Original ASR of IAF wanted LCA to be 6 ton aircraft while ADA wanted to keep it around 5500kg but change in ASR by 2004 and also in wing design to carry heavy Weapons load , meant that weight went up to around 6500 same as a Gripen C ,

I really have my doubts about the MK1 surpassing the Mirage, had it been true then may be the IAF would not have signed up for the Mirage 2000 upgrade which costs more than the price of a new Tejas per plane.

Its not that IAF wanted to upgrade Mirage badly , after price negotiations failed IAF was considering HAL upgrade package with Israeli help , but after Indo-french Nuke agreement French needed to be rewarded too so the deal was awarded to them , IAF had other option (HAL-Israeli) but GOI stuck with French ,so nothing to do with Tejas Mk-1

I think that IAF will appreciate the performance of LCA only after LSP-6 is handed over as I think that this will be the first aircraft meant for IAF (and perhaps will not have any test instrumention which weight down the aircraft due to weight, down time & power consumption)

PV-6 will be used has a Test bed for further expansion of AOA of Tejas , while the remaining last two LSp-7/8 will be given to Air force for Trials .

acceleration is significantly less at “sea level “ ,it nothing to do with air frame design ,it because Engine is not flat rate , and Tejas MK-1 will be posted in Sulur first and then to Border air base near Indo-pak border , it has already carried its full weapon load , only testing is left for which LSP-3/4/5 are all geared up

Navy wants a fifth gen fighter aircraft , and they were considering F-35 for that role if Pak-fa naval is available by that time they may buy them , IAC-2 and 3 will be bigger and be able to handle bigger aircrafts

its easier said then done , HAL took two years to set up production plant for Tejas after funding was cleared and still very limited LSP’s are available , HAL is no Boeing to start manufacturing aircraft’s in high numbers ,it will take them 5 more years to hit 12-14 aircraft’s mark for tejas

If India had an indigenous stealth program that would make sense. Unfortunately they hire out their best work. Maybe the ATD-X will be ready quicker and they find themselves disenchanted with PAK-FA. Japan might be willing to swap some shop talk at that point or make an outright sale to India if they find it to their own advantage. I don’t see Japan too interested in Tejas at this point. Maybe India has know-how in another field they would be willing to swap.

I don’t think Japanese are way head of us in any way in Fighter aircraft development their technology is still mainly build from American fighters , Indian and japan enjoy a good relationship and India has been good in avionics and EW and we will see some in Pak-Fa too , common technology can be shared with this two fighter jet program
